Psalm 51:10-12: "Create in me a clean heart, O God, and put a new and right spirit within me. Do not cast me away from your presence, and do not take your holy spirit from me. Restore to me the joy of your salvation, and sustain in me a willing spirit" (NRSV).

And so on Wednesday, when we were having our little 9:30 staff meeting at Open Book downtown, we had been emailing with Nancy Ann Yeager, the Director of Operations at Minnehaha, and in that same time we received news about the explosion. And just so you know, when we received that news, we did not break into a hymn. Nobody connected to the school was singing at 10:15 on Wednesday morning. It was frazzling and heartbreaking.
There are two things that the Bible tells us about the heart that we need to know in order to understand this petition in Psalm 51, verse 10. And so the plan for the sermon is to first look at these two things about the heart and then work our way back to this petition in Psalm 51, and in this petition I think we learn three things very practical things.
This is what we need to know about the heart when we come to Psalm 51. Our hearts are what God mainly cares about, and our hearts are terribly broken. And therefore, the absolute only thing we could do about our hearts is exactly what David does in verse 10. He asks God for a new one.
God did not stumble upon a few different parts of the universe that he then reassembled as the world. There was once absolutely nothing outside of God. There was only God in his triune fellowship. There was no created thing. But then God spoke and created the universe. Which means that now everything that exists, everything in the universe, goes back to that one decisive moment when God acted.
Leviticus 16 describes the ritual of cleansing and sacrifice the high priest was required to complete before approaching the Mercy Seat in the temple. The high priest did his best, but even this rigorous process was not enough to make even the best of men 100% clean.
Do we not often feel the same need to go to the Father? To ask his forgiveness? To ask our God to create in us a new heart? Surely we do. And when we do, let us be open to His mercy and also to His direction.
This is something I always ask from the Lord God. A clean heart. A heart the knows how to forgive, understand, stay patient, and kind despite all the chaos. Dear God, help me to be like You in times when I feel like I am losing myself. Help me to see the beauty of things when everything seems to be in havoc. Amen.
Many are struggling with their relationship with God. And quite often the reasons can be rather complexed. Have a deep analysis of yourself. Are you living with a pure and clean heart? Or, Is there sin and guilt hampering your relationship with God?
Heavenly Father, each new day brings a fresh start, a new opportunity for me to align my heart with Yours. Help me, Lord, to have a heart that seeks after You, a heart that is pure, clean, and steadfast. Thank You for this, another chance and day You have given to me.
Just as the morning dew refreshes the earth, refresh my heart today, Lord. Remove any impurities, bitterness, or malice that may reside within me. Replace them with Your love, compassion, and peace. Let my heart reflect Your glory, Your grace, and Your purity throughout this day.
Help me to remove all the doubts and unclean thoughts that are inside my mind, heart, and soul now. Let Your power be revealed in me and through me, oh God, and create in me a clean and pure heart.
Dear Lord, I ask for Your divine purification this morning. Let Your Holy Spirit convict me of any sin that has made a home in my heart, and lead me to repentance. Cleanse me from all unrighteousness and create in me a clean heart, O God.
God of all comfort, instill in me a steadfast spirit that is unwavering in faith. Even when the storms of life rage around me, may my heart remain anchored in Your love and truth. Help me to be steadfast, immovable, always excelling in Your work, knowing that my labor in the Lord is not in vain.
As I navigate through this day, let my heart be steadfast in pursuing righteousness and steadfast in demonstrating Your love to those around me. Keep my spirit grounded in Your truth, and let me not be swayed by the ways of this world.
Father, as You create in me a clean heart and renew a steadfast spirit within me, let my life reflect Your love. May my heart be an outpouring of Your grace and mercy. As others encounter me, let them encounter You through my actions, my words, and my life.

Jesus thank you for these precious people that love you. Watch over and protect them. Lord I, too ask for a clean heart, pure, like yours with love, mercy, grace looking toward us with favor. Hold us, help us, guide us, be our all in all. Thank you for your shed blood and for enduring the cross!
Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me. Do not cast me from your presence or take your Holy Spirit from me. Restore to me the joy of your salvation and grant me a willing spirit, to sustain me. (Psalm 51: 10-12)
Psalm 37:4 tells us that God will give us the desires of our hearts. If one of our desires is to see our heart made right with God, then He will most certainly grant that request. Pray for your heart to be made pure, and God will wash it clean!
He prays for sanctifying grace; and this every true penitent is as earnest for as for pardon and peace. He does not pray, "Lord, preserve me my reputation," as Saul, I have sinned, yet honour me before this people. No; his great concern is to get his corrupt nature changed: the sin he had been guilty of was,
(1.) An evidence of its impurity, and therefore he prays, Create in me a clean heart, O God! He now saw, more than ever, what an unclean heart he had, and sadly laments it, but sees it is not in his own power to amend it, and therefore begs of God (whose prerogative it is to create) that he would create in him a clean heart. He only that made the heart can new-make it; and to his power nothing is impossible. He created the world by the word of his power as the God of nature, and it is by the word of his power as the God of grace that we are clean (Jn. 15:3), that we are sanctified, Jn. 17:17.
(2.) It was the cause of its disorder, and undid much of the good work that had been wrought in him; and therefore he prays, "Lord, renew a right spirit within me; repair the decays of spiritual strength which this sin has been the cause of, and set me to rights again." Renew a constant spirit within me, so some. He had, in this matter, discovered much inconstancy and inconsistency with himself, and therefore he prays, "Lord, fix me for the time to come, that I may never in like manner depart from thee." - Matthew Henry
A neo-cleassical setting of Psalm 51, expressing our need for forgiveness and spiritual cleansing before a holy God. Comfortable ranges and rich four-part writing make this an exellent choice for choirs of any size.
