Former Northwestern University football coach Pat Fitzgerald sued the school Thursday for $130 million, saying his alma mater wrongfully fired him after 17 years in the wake of a hazing and abuse scandal that has engulfed the athletic department. (Oct. 5)
Police body camera video shows an Alabama high school band director being shocked with a stun gun and arrested by officers in front of screaming students after he refused to immediately stop the band following a football game. (Sept. 20)

I've come to a realization at this point in my life. I find that I either really, really care about something or I don't care about it at all. It's why I'm so invested in certain TV shows and could not care less about others most. It's why I'll devour one book in three days but stop reading another one after 15 pages. And it certainly shows itself sports.
I grew up a maniacal New York Giants, New York Mets and New Jersey Devils fan. I was only slightly a New York Knicks fan and/or New Jersey Nets fan, depending. I didn't much care for basketball as a wee one. We won't discuss the whole Notre Dame football thing, but sufficed to say I've been all about Syracuse Orange football since 1996.
As I got older, I started to hone in on certain things. It was as if there was a Venn Diagram for my sports fandom life and it was getting more and more specific. The two circles seemed to be Sports Viewed and Things I'm Passionate About. At the far end of the Sports circle went hockey, baseball and pro basketball. To the overlap went college basketball, college football and pro football (and lacrosse, I s'pose). In the other circle, things like the Devils and Mets became peripheral. I root for them quietly but can't claim any kind of passionate response to their wins and losses (probably for the best where the Mets are concerned).
As for the Giants, SU basketball and SU football? I'm locked in. I'm die-hard. And, likely due to this site, even more-so on all things Syracuse than the Giants. Because, if I'm being honest, the circles really intersect at "Syracuse" and "college football" more than anything else in my rooting life.
I am, above everything, a college football fan and a Syracuse Orange fan. I could not be more excited for this week ahead. It's probably the most absurd and frustrating of all the major American sports, what with its season-ending exhibition games and dubious champion-determining systems, but, that's part of it's sick charm. Something that even those not from here can't help but appreciate:
The second half of the college football season is here, and the stakes continue to grow as the number of squads with a true path to the last four-team playoff dwindles. This week, the ranks of the undefeated will be reduced by at least one, and at least two clubs will be dealt a second loss.
In all, four Top 25 matchups are featured on the Week 8 slate, and a couple more should also be on your radar as you plan your Saturday viewing. As always, keep in mind that notable events can unfold in unexpected places, but here are the six games we recommend.
Notre Dame fans have seen a lot of Fighting Irish football this season, with the Golden Domers even being the marquee Week 0 matchup out of Dublin, Ireland. In Week 8, Notre Dame will take its 6-2 record into a bye week as it prepares for the final four-game stretch of the year.
The Fighting Irish went from their lowest point in Week 6 to its highest Week 7, bouncing back from a loss to Louisville to beat USC 48-20 in a dominant defensive performance that saw three interceptions and two fumble recoveries.
Sam Hartman will return with a new look in Week 9, having shaved his characteristic beard during the bye week. The Irish even posted on it. For now, that remains the biggest storyline for the Fighting Irish in Week 8.
After Pitt, Notre Dame will finish its season against ACC opponents Clemson and Wake Forest (reuniting Hartman with his old team) and Pac-12 rival Stanford. All of Notre Dame's opponents to close the season will be unranked.
