Director published DCR files that were played using the Adobe Shockwave Player, in addition to compiling native executables for Microsoft Windows and Mac OS X. Director allowed users to build applications on a movie metaphor, with the user as the "director" of the movie. Originally designed for creating animation sequences, the addition of a scripting language called Lingo made it a popular choice for creating CD-ROMs, standalone kiosks and internet video games content during the 1990s.

I have in fact noted this in my post(not the director part but that is most likely not relevant to my problem). I am not as much looking for information as to why I am experiencing this problem but rather how I can solve it

This isn't the correct answer sadly. As I stated, they were DCR files made to be run by an old version of Shockwave. This is an index directory that the program opens and when you click on the file, it attempts to run the file using shockwave.

How can I export a director file that supports interactivity from Adobe Director for it to be played in Windows and Mac with the same file format? I can only think of .swf format which Director doesn't seem to offer....

I got a new pc a few weeks ago and recently downloaded Firefox. I don't know if shockwave for director came with the download. But it's listed under PLUGINS. It shows a warning that it's vulnerable and should be updated. I don't want to do that. Even if I did update it, there isn't any way on the PLUGINS screen to REMOVE a plugin. That's what I want to do. I checked Windows Control Panel to unistall, but it's not listed under Adobe, Intel, Shockwave, etc. I read another post where people suggested some real techie things that I'd never want to try. Dear Firefox: please find a way to put "REMOVE" as an option to remove a plugin.

Adobe Director is a powerful media application developed by Macromedia today part of Adobe Systems Incorporated. It enables users to build interactive applications built on top of a movie metaphor, with the whole user as the director of the movie. Originally developed for building cartoon sequences, the integration of a very easy scripting language called Lingo gave it a competitive edge over other similar programs. It can be used for a wide variety of purposes, such as building, editing, animations, video post-production and time-line monitoring. Its key features include its ability to create complex movies with multiple scenes, a fully featured track editor, drag and drop functionality, the ability to add text, jump cuts and music and the option to record everything as it happens.

The popularity of Adobe Director has led many people to attempt to port similar QuickTime and Windows programs to the Apple Macintosh computers. This resulted in a number of Apple computer users who have been using adobe application titles to create multimedia applications and films. Most porting efforts have been unsuccessful and have not gained much attention. On the positive side, however, the overall functionality of the Adobe software is superior to that of Apple's own QuickTime and Microsoft's Windows Media Player.

Adobe Director is an impressive media application created by Macromedia currently as part of Adobe Systems Incorporated. It allows users to create interactive apps built around a film metaphor, using the entire user acting as the director for the film. Created originally to build animation sequences, the inclusion of a simple scripting language, called Lingo provided it with a competitive advantage over similar applications. It is a great tool for a myriad of applications, including creating animations, editing as well as video post-production and monitoring.

If not, see if the plugin is loaded by your browser by going to about:plugins and check if "Adobe Director Shockwave" is on the list. If it's not on the list, close all browser windows (only those you would use to play Spineworld on) and try again.
If still you get a black screen try:

The Flash sandbox uses some elements of the already-in-place technology that Chrome uses to protect HTML and JavaScript, but much of the new work was created from scratch, added Brad Arkin, Adobe's director of security and privacy. "The biggest challenge was getting the full functionally of Flash from within this new sandbox," he said.

With Apple Computer porting its Macintosh operating system to Intel processors, Adobe will be able to create a new Macintosh version in a reasonable amount of time, said Simon Hayhurst, director of product management for dynamic media at Adobe.
