It was great to meet some of the members on Saturday and put some faces to the names on here,  Just a shame I couldn't make it to the bbq later.

Here is my attempt to image the Western Veil using my unmodified Canon 700D dslr.
There is a distinct lack of red due to the camera's built-in filter.
Some more filaments can be seen to the left.

As you can see, there are far too many stars visible.  How do you image faint nebulae without getting so many stars?

Esprit 80ED with field flattener, 10x660s lights and 2 darks.
Processed with DeepSkyStacker and enhanced with Photoshop.

John,
That's so much better.  From the star spikes it looks as if you used a Newtonian?
I am interested in how many images you used and how you processed them

Yes a Newtonian

This is 25 Lights at ISO800 and 300 Second exposures, 10 darks and 10 flats.

Stacked with DSS and then cropped and light adjustments on the levels and curves

its actually on our home page http://croydonastro.org.uk/ top banner.

I keep thinking about a CCD but I dont think I have pushed my DSLR to the limit yet.

Depending on the target with a modded DSLR you can get good resutls see attached.

Hey Trevor,

That's a nice image. As John Berman suggested, get your Canon 700D
modified as you are losing much of the red Halpha content.

The Veil nebula consists of 3 main segments - the Western Veil (or
Witch's broom), the Eastern Veil which you captured in your previous
attached image and Pickering's Triangle of which your comment 'Some more
filaments can be seen to the left' is partially shown.

Attached is an image I took of the 'Triangle' a couple of years ago
using a 10" RCT with a QSI camera using narrow band filters.

The Veil nebula is very close to the galactic plane (i.e. the Milky Way)
so its not surprising your image is full of stars. Using a DSLR captures
a much larger FOV which will of course show many more stars.

Happy imaging ;-)
