Bode nebula taken last night or rather early hours this morning from kenely. 43 frames taken 4 min exposure. I use L pro optlong filter. Eq5 on pillar and f/9 ed celestron. It was guided using phd2. Camera was a zwoISA294 color pro tec. Moon was half.

Very good Kevin.  There's a lot of detail in the spiral arms.  I wonder if it would come out even more increasing brightness?

There are two large stars above the galaxy core.  The smaller of the two looks like it has two overlapping disks.  I don't think it's an artefact as it's the only star I can see like that.  A double star?

Thank you James on a rainy day when I got nothing wake to do it is the sort of thing I can ait down and work on, but I feel I need more data, maybe 5 mins exposure and do 60 plus frames

The double star that James spotted, above the galaxy core, is HIP 48635

Double star indicated on attached photo.  Zoom in and you see it is a
double.

The HIP reference is for the star catalogue generated by the HIPPARCOS satellite in the 1990s.

There are at least another five designations from other star catalogues but they don’t really matter to this discussion.
What does matter are the facts about the stars, as Graham stated 9 arc seconds separated and they are mag 10.47 & 10.73.

You managed in conditions more suited to flying a flag than operating a telescope, by care with your setup and skilful processing of the data, to easily split this double star.
Well done Kevin!

Tony.

Yes, nice looking image, and very good guiding too, as evidenced by the PHD2 screenshot.

Galaxies being stars radiate at all wavelengths so the Optolong L Pro filter, is a good choice as it let's through the important H-alpha 656nm, OIII 496nm and 500nm, SII 672nm and H-beta 486nm. Transmission range is about 65% and the blocked 35% is where the street lights are.

Of course one could add more specialised filters, say just H-alpha 656nm, and then bring out the nebulae, and then you're in Tim's territory :).

The filter and the cooled camera is a good combination for this object, with the 900 mm length giving good reach for this galaxy.

Well done, and you're right in that a longer time with more frames will give you more to work with.
Thanks for sharing, William
