Welcome to the Crowdsourcing Biology group.  This forum can be used to discuss any topics related to crowdsourcing for biology research and education.  It is also the primary mailing list for the Google Summer of Code program on Crowdsourcing Biology.

Dear potential applicants,

We understand that some of you may have hesitations about developing your project ideas here on this public mailing list, particularly since a good project idea is at the core of a good application.  It's an issue that we've certainly thought about, and we certainly don't want to drive people away who are coming up with innovative ideas.  I have a few thoughts on this:

  • First, we mentors are watching very closely where ideas are coming from, and the mailing list is a perfect way to have a definitive record of that.  So, don't blatantly steal others' ideas, and don't be worried that your ideas will be stolen.
  • Second, it is our hope that you can also read the discussions from other applicants to better learn what we're looking for, and vice versa.  This exchange will make everyone's applications even better, and we think this "idea building" process is in the open source spirit.
  • Third, once we get to the stage of establishing your specific qualifications through code samples and/or a resumes, we definitely will be moving those to private emails as well.
Finally, if you're still not comfortable posting here, feel free to directly contact mentors to refine ideas over email.  Please post here or contact me if you have any additional concerns.

Cheers,
-andrew

Hi, I'd like to participate for GSOC 2013 for the proposed projects of Crowdsourcing Biology.I would like to choose Java as   my conventional language.Hence I would like to get a better idea of the type of project for GSOC 2013

Hi Shalini,

We don't really have any active projects developed in Java aside from the server-side code for the game The Cure.  The evolving ideas list is now up here:
(Check back there for updates as we continue to build it)
and the code for The Cure game is here

cheers
-Ben
