ABCD Egg-cite and Eat Right ----------------------------------------------------- This weekend is Easter and a familiar pastime for my family is dyeing hard boiled eggs. The past few years I have been trying to dye the eggs using natural colors from food. The only one I could really get to work was the red cabbage (which turns the egg blue) and the beet (which made a beautiful pink). This year I decided to do more research after seeing this picture pinned to a pinterest board.
If you are considering dyeing the natural way look to use the following fruits, vegetables or spices to change things up. For a little extra fun wrap the eggs in rubber bands, cover with stickers or rubber cement to make fun designs. Red- Slice up a beet and boil in 1 quart of water. Allow beets and water to cool. Remove the boiled beets and add 1 Tablespoon vinegar. Soak hard boiled egg for 1-3 hours. Blue- 1 head of red cabbage cut up and boiled in 2 quarts of water for 10 minutes. Remove chunks of cabbage. Let water cool. Add 1 Tablespoon vinegar. Soak hard boiled egg for 1-3 hours. Yellow/Orange- Add 2 Tablespoons Turmeric to water and mix. Add 1 Tablespoon vinegar. Soak hard boiled egg for 1-3 hours. Green- Boil 1 package of chopped frozen spinach for 20 minutes. Remove spinach and cool water. Add 1 Tablespoon vinegar. Soak hard boiled egg for 1-3 hours. Puree the leftover boiled beets and add them to pancake batter for a healthy and colorful addition to breakfast. Add the boiled spinach to a family dinner that includes cheese and spinach quesadillas or enchiladas. And don't forget about the beautifully dyed eggs that go great by themselves or chopped up in an egg salad sandwich. |
