A friend just asked me about "green" dry cleaning, so I thought I'd
post an article here explaining the different types of cleaning.
From Green America:
http://www.greenamerica.org/livinggreen/drycleaning.cfm.
Essentially....
* Regular dry cleaning contains PERC = bad for health and environment
* "Organic" dry cleaning is misleading nonsense = contains organic
compounds, but they still contain toxic hydrocarbons
* Look for a wet cleaning process, which is fine for most "dry clean
only" items = contains no VOCs
* Look for liquid CO2 process = contains no VOCs, and produces no
additional greenhouse gases as the CO2 used is a recaptures waste
byproduct from other industrial manufacturing processes.
Here is a link to search local alternative dry cleaners, although it
looks out of date:
http://nodryclean.com. I know that Percio's in
Croton can do the liquid CO2 process.
Cheers,
Leila
