Dear Friends,
As usual, you are on my mailing list because you have sent me mail and you get added when I respond. If you
want off, let me know, and it will be so.) Computers are confusing to
non-geeks. If you don't know how you got onto my mailing list, I don't either,
so I'm sorry in advance. If you asked to be taken off, and you weren't, also sorry. I'll try again.
The most exciting news I have to report is the advent of my Community-Based, Cross-Cultural Health and Healing Program through Southwest College in Santa Fe, New Mexico. The program is entirely on-line with community mentors and language instructors and was designed for human service practitioners/providers who find themselves working in communities which are not their own culture. The goal is to provide the instruction, awareness, training, and mentorship to learn about that community (in collaboration with the community itself) in such a way that working in the community becomes fun and interested. The program will be evaluated upon whether or not we can actually increase retention of practitioners/providers in rural and remote communities. For the full details, go to
http://groups.google.com/group/crossculturaltraining. The first course starts in June, 2008, and I hope some of you join me.
I'm still creating cyber-communities for communication and collaborative research. Go to my web site at
http://mehlmadrona.mysite.com and click the "My Projects" page to see the
communities I am creating and join one or more if you wish.
I've just joined the steering committee for the American Psychiatric Association
CAM (complementary and alternative medicine) Caucus and am planning to integrate
some of my cyber-communities with their web site, which is www.apacam.org.
Please consider joining APA CAm to help us change psychiatry. You don't have
to be a psychiatrist to join us.
Briefly, I have an aboriginal mind and mental health site and discussion group,
a general discussion group (coyote medicine), a group for my students and
colleagues (coyotewisdom) and groups for the various research projects for
which I am seeking collaborators.
In April, I will be at Star Wisdom in Chappaqua, NY from April 25-27. Check my website at http://mehlmadrona.mysite.com_
for details.
In May, I will be giving a course on Spirituality and Psychiatry for the American Psychiatric Association at their annual meeting in Washington, DC, on Sunday, May 4th. On Thursday, May 5th, I am chairing an all-afternoon symposium on indigenous models of mind and mental health. On Saturday, May 17th, I will be giving a web-based presentation on Imagery for dialogue with an Illness for the Academy of Guided Imagery. On Sunday, May 25th, I will speak in Toronto, at the 1st International Conference on Complementary and Alternative Medicine and Mental Health.
On June 10th, I will be on the Thom Hartmann radio show and will give a presentation in the evening at the New Rennaissance Book Shop in Portland, Oregon. I will speak at the Spirituality and Social Work conference in Fredericton, New Brunswick, on June 19th, and will give a workshop in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, at Aviana Retreat Center, starting the evening of June 20th through June 22nd.
I look forward to hearing what each of you are doing, and welcome others who
would like to collaborate.
