The purpose of ISO 3166-2 is to establish an international standard of short and unique alphanumeric codes to represent the relevant administrative divisions and dependent territories of all countries in a more convenient and less ambiguous form than their full names. Each complete ISO 3166-2 code consists of two parts, separated by a hyphen:[1]

The format of the ISO 3166-2 codes is different for each country. The codes may be alphabetic, numeric, or alphanumeric, and they may also be of constant or variable length. The following is a table of the ISO 3166-2 codes of each country (those with codes defined), grouped by their format:[citation needed]

The ISO 3166/MA updates ISO 3166-2 when necessary. Changes in ISO 3166-2 consist mostly of spelling corrections, addition and deletion of subdivisions, and modification of the administrative structure.

ISO 3166-2:US is the entry for the United States in ISO 3166-2, part of the ISO 3166 standard published by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), which defines codes for the names of the principal subdivisions (e.g., provinces or states) of all countries coded in ISO 3166-1.

Each code consists of two parts, separated by a hyphen. The first part is .mw-parser-output .monospacedfont-family:monospace,monospaceUS, the ISO 3166-1 alpha-2 code of the United States. The second part is two letters, which is the postal abbreviation of the state, district, or outlying area, except the United States Minor Outlying Islands which do not have a postal abbreviation.

ISO 3166-2:2013 establishes a universally applicable code for the representation of the names of principal administrative divisions of countries and territories included in ISO 3166-1. It is intended to be used in conjunction with ISO 3166-1.

Clauses 4 to 7 of ISO 3166-2:2013 provide the structure for a code for the representation of names of principal administrative divisions, or similar areas, of the countries and geopolitical entities included in ISO 3166-1.

The codes in ISO 3166 are available on the Online Browsing Platform. The information on the OBP is always up to date and you can sign up for notifications to be informed when changes are made by clicking on the follow function in the top right-hand corner.

We also have a product, the Country Codes Collection, which you can preview free of charge on the OBP (where you will also find a decoding table). It contains the codes from Parts 1, 2 and 3 of ISO 3166 in three different formats (.xml, .csv, and .xls) for easy integration into your own systems. You will be notified when changes are made so you can download the latest versions. In this way, you can be sure that your database is always using the most up-to-date information from ISO.

The country codes can be represented either as a two-letter code (alpha-2) which is recommended as the general-purpose code, a three-letter code (alpha-3) which is more closely related to the country name and a three-digit numeric code (numeric-3) which can be useful if you need to avoid using Latin script.

The codes for subdivisions are represented as the alpha-2 code for the country, followed by up to three characters. For example ID-RI is the Riau province of Indonesia and NG-RI is the Rivers province in Nigeria. Names and codes for subdivisions are usually taken from relevant official national information sources.

Users of ISO country codes have the option to subscribe to a paid service that automatically provides updates and supplies the data in formats* that are ready-to-use for a wide range of applications. For more information, visit the ISO Store.

Following notification from the United Nations (UN), the ISO 3166 Maintenance Agency assigns alpha-2 and alpha-3 country code elements to new UN member states. The numeric country code is assigned by the UN.

However, the ISO 3166 Maintenance Agency may assign country codes to dependencies of countries that are member states of the UN. To be considered, some criteria, amongst others, include that the area be physically separated from its parent country and outside its territorial waters. Even if all criteria are met, the ISO 3166 Maintenance Agency may decide not to assign a code element, for example, due to the very limited number of official alpha-2 code elements available.

ISO 3166-2:US is the part for the United States in ISO 3166-2. This is part of the ISO 3166 standard published by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO). They decide the codes for the names of the subdivisions (e.g., provinces or states) of all countries coded in I 3166-1.

I know that ISO 3166-2 standard contains the list of regions in countries (however those regions are called).
But other than the fact that a full list is available on Wikipedia I cannot find any official JSON/XML/CSV/... file containing the standard.I would assume that www.iso.org would have an API providing this file but did not find any.

Per the ISO website, the official way to obtain ISO 3166 codes is the Country Codes Collection, which contains the codes from parts 1, 2 and 3 of ISO 3166 in XML, CSV and XLS formats. As it is a product (selling standards is big money!) it will set you back 300 CHF ($USD340).

ISO 3166-1-alpha-2 English country names and code elements. This list statesthe country names (official short names in English) in alphabetical order asgiven in ISO 3166-1 and the corresponding ISO 3166-1-alpha-2 code elements.

Nevertheless, it should be noted that this material is ultimately sourced fromISO and their rights and licensing policy is somewhat unclear. As this is ashort, simple database of facts there is a strong argument that no rights cansubsist in this collection. However, ISO state on theirsite:

For lot of countries for e.g Taiwan (TW), India (IN), the state codes specified in countries.inc file are not same as ISO-3166 codes ( _3166-2:TW). On searching I found couple of issues to correct the codes but those issues dealt with specific countries and were fixed by changing .inc file for that country. Also in one of the other issue it was mentioned that state codes are based on the information in But that's also not true for lot of countries. Wondering what standard is being followed in regards to State Codes and what's the best way to have state codes (for all countries) defined in addresses module be based on the same standard.

The ISO 3166 Maintenance Agency regularly updates the country codes based on information from the United Nations. The agency sends notifications of any changes they make to the standard so you can download the latest version.

As you saw if you follow ourGeocoding API change log, yesterday we began addingISO 3166-2 codes to the components portion of each result. (If such a code or codes exists for the location, and if the underlyingdata sources we rely on enable the determination of the correct codes(s).

Finally, be aware that there are many dependent territories that for historical reasons have their own ISO 3166-1 code, but have a different country prefix in their ISO 3166-2 code. A good example is Puerto Rico. You can see the ISO 3166-1 alpha2 code is PR, but the ISO 3166-2 code is US-PR because Puerto Rico is part of the United States.

available in multiple languages, in CSV, JSON, PHP, SQL and XML formats, with associated alpha-2, alpha-3, and numeric codes as defined by the ISO 3166 standard, and with national flags included; also available are the ISO 3166-2 codes used for identifying the principal subdivisions (e.g., provinces or states) of all countries coded in ISO 3166-1

Constantly updated lists of world countries, territories and areas of geographical interest, with associated alpha-2, alpha-3 and numeric codes as defined by the ISO 3166-1 standard, published and maintained by the International Organization for Standardization, available in CSV, JSON, PHP, SQL and XML formats, in multiple languages and with national flags included. Also available are the ISO 3166-2 codes used for identifying the principal subdivisions (e.g., provinces or states) of all countries coded in ISO 3166-1.

The project also tries to be a comprehensive and up-to-date source for ISO 3166-2 which defines codes for identifying the principal subdivisions (e.g., provinces or states) of all countries coded in ISO 3166-1.

The first part is the ISO 3166-1 alpha-2 code of the country;
The second part is a string of up to three alphanumeric characters, which is usually obtained from national sources and stems from coding systems already in use in the country concerned, but may also be developed by the ISO itself.
Each complete ISO 3166-2 code can then be used to uniquely identify a country subdivision in a global context.

To download the entire package containing all the world countries in all the 34 languages, in all the available formats (CSV, JSON, PHP, SQL and XML), with flags included, and with the ISO 3166-2 list of administrative divisions and dependent territories of all countries, use the big Download button at the top.
