Has anyone been able to change the default notification sound for Hangouts Chat on Android? I get a ton of notifications on my phone from all kinds of services. I change the sound so I can easily tell which times I really need to check my phone. I've done this with Hangouts in the past, even with two different accounts. Now that we've migrated to Hangouts Chat, I still cannot find how to set a custom notification sound.

When there is a new incoming message in a Google Hangout multi-person chat that I have joined, neither the Windows taskbar icon for the Hangout chat window nor the Hangouts icon in the Windows notification area / "system tray" flash or otherwise indicate that there has been a new message.

I'm not sure at this point why no notification occurs on incoming messages. Is the OS preventing it? Is there some Hangouts setting that I have inadvertently disabled? Does Hangouts simply not have this functionality?

Beyond this as far as I have been able to determine this is a limitation of the browser based version of hangouts (GMail, Google+, etc.). Each time I tested this implementation the only time I got any noticeable notification was if I already had a chat started and in some way active. New chats and messages sent when Window was not the active window we not present.

However, I did try the same after installing the Google Apps version. Since this version acts like a normal installed messaging client it was able to pop the chat box up and able to generate active system alert sounds.

Until Google finds a better method for the browser based versions of hangouts you may wish to install the apps version by going to the Hangouts homepage and selecting the Computers option for installation.

I wasn't able to do any extensive testing, but the issue of notifications not showing seemed to be resolved in the short term (I tested with a co-worker by having him send me messages with the hangouts window both closed, open, and minimized).

I have tested the new version briefly, but only real, everyday use will tell if the notification issues are resolved. The interface update, and the way it minimizes to a icon button seems decent, and I think I'll end up liking it.

I'm working on an app that has a feature to make phone or video calls. When you do this with Hangouts or Facebook Messanger app, there is a push notification that gets sent to the recipient. However this notification is a little different in 2 aspects.

When a call is coming in, you don't need two separate notifications going off at the same time on your phone. To stop this from happening, disable call forwarding to your mobile number in your Voice account. Afterward, only the Hangouts app will ring. Here's how:

By default, the Hangouts app will play the same alert for instant messages, Google Voice SMS, and carrier SMS (if you are using it as your default SMS app). This may work for someone who always has a moment to check his or her phone, but if you want different notifications, you can easily change them in the Settings menu.

Once the new conversation has been established, a narrow window will pop up on the bottom right side of the browser window. This area is where you can message the person, add them to a Hangout group, or simply start the Video Call by clicking on the video icon. The gear icon opens the options area for archiving or deleting the conversation, blocking the user, getting notifications, and viewing the history.

Audible notification for Message+ on Galaxy S8 stopped working yesterday 6.17. All settings are correct and volume is up. Reboot did not help. Previous comment above (re: building?) is not coherent with this thread. Has anyone else experienced this issue?

I also have had this issue with my J3 for months and just took the time to figure it out. Like the above I had the notifications on in messages. I discovered through Facebook messenger my notifications were off. I clicked and it took me to phone setting for notifications. All were turned off, surely something I did at some point. Anyway I went through and changed all apps that I did want notifications from and that solved receiving sounds for FB,messenger, emails etc.

First, go to Softkey (Menu icon left of Home button) > Settings > More > Application Manger. Select Go SMS (or your default text app). Make sure "show notifications" is checked. This worked for me! I hope it helps.

1. Turn the notifications OFF in the app settings: (pull the notification area down > touch the gear icon to open Settings > More > Application Manager > All > Messaging > Show notifications (uncheck it)

5. Send yourself another message and before it arrives, immediately exit the app again. You should still NOT receive the notification at this point, but by now you will have forced the phone to accept your own "notification off" setting (I love reverse psychology)

9. Send yourself yet another message. Again, before it arrives, immediately exit the app. At this point I did receive the notification, but if you do not, restart the phone one last time and try texting yourself while doing the whole bailing-faster-than-a-hamster shimmy.

After trying everything else suggested, this hold volume button, then settings button from there, sure enough, my 'notifications' volume was at zero & all I had to do was adjust it on again. Thank you so much!!!

Yay!! I was going insane trying to figure this out. Especially when all other notifications sounds worked. It was just for my texts with either Go SMS Pro or the basic default text. I followed the above directions and EUREKA!!! After a week of trying everything in my power, it now works. So thanks.

Ok I was really annoyed when I never got any notification when someone texted me, I have a galaxy s4 and I read all of these comments and nothing worked I know nothing about phones, I had no choice but to tern on sms again grr. My phone just needed a update and after I updated my phone it worked again hahaha it was so easy you just have to wait until you need an update then it fixed mine hope it helps!!!!

Unchecking SMS in Hangouts worked for me. Weird that Hangouts showed Notification on with sound, but still didn't make any sound when text came in. Maybe it has to be up and running in the foreground before it will sound off.

I am sorry if this is a year too late. I had the same problem. I just went into settings, from settings go to the (my device) tab then go to (sound) then scroll down to messages. When you click messages there should be a box that says notifications. It should be checked. If it isn't then this is your problem

Hi, my problem was that i did not received notifications for ChompSMS after i had to remove and again install the chompSMS App! for problem solving, I set the default app as SMS tool and then i did received notification. Back to ChompSMS as default App and checked the notifications setting : the notifications were enabled. Strange, still no notifications in Chomp SMS !!!!! Finaly it seemed like i also had to check the phone configuration : 'settings/manage Apps/chomp SMS' the checkbox 'show notifications' was not enabled. Enabled this setting and all was OK again.

it happened in my J7 core. all what i have done . just go to apps then press up right side find there show system apps while you press this option you will see all apps just select ((message service)) then ((allowed )) the (notification)....... then also select ((messages)) and ((allowed )) the (notification) . i hope it work

If your phone is signed into Google (which you'll have been prompted to very prominently when you set it up), you have a Google account and that includes Gmail, Google+ etc. It sounds as though you somehow managed to set Hangouts as your message client at some point. It's not a default and I've never bumped into it myself. Glad you're sorted, though.

The application was created because of an absence of any usable Hangouts messages notification application which does not require a running web browser. The application uses Google Hangouts web interface and IE engine. Information about new message is displayed in a configurable popup window. The application also preserves the possibility of communication, including file exchange and the possibility of making video chats.

Google Chat becomes even more valuable with you combine it with Greetly's visitor management system. By using Google Chat and Greetly, your team can receive instant alert notifications the moment a visitor or delivery arrives at your workplace.

Fast reception notifications right with the Chat desktop and mobile applications you are already using leads to warm welcomes and a productive workplace. Wow, that sounds a lot like Greetly's mission.

Whether they use a self-service kiosk or Greetly's pioneering touchless visitor registration software, the moment a guest completes their registration employees will receive host notifications. And since your team lives on their smartphones, using Google Chat to receive reception alerts means they'll know immediately when their guest or delivery has arrived.

Some visitor management solutions want to force you to receive host notification alerts in their proprietary apps. Greetly is focused on the best user experience possible. That's why we create a Google Hangouts Chat integration - so you can receive guest arrival notifications in the software you already use all day, every day.

Sending real-time host notifications, and having them being seen immediately, gives you the option to greet guests more quickly. Providing a warm welcome is one of the most important features of a hospitality mindset. Great first impressions begin with Greetly + the Chat app.

This can be achieved by customizing check in workflows so multiple hosts are notified. Or, with Greetly's co-pilot feature, individual users can have an administrative assistant or backup copied on all of their notifications. In both cases, each recipient will receive host alerts according to their personal reception notification preferences.
