Commemorative gathering and programme began a day of marking the
anniversary of Vukovar victims of the Croatian Homeland War, "1991
Vukovar remembrance Day", at the Vukovar County General hospital.
Croatian Parliament determined a remembrance day would pay tribute to
all Vukovar victims and this city`s suffering of Serbian aggression in
1991.

This year`s motto of the "In Vukovar for truth and justice" programme
is "Remembrance Day of Vukovar victims, 1991".The commemorative
gathering was attended by Croatian President Stjepan Mesic, Croatian
Parliament president Vladimir Seks, Minister of Family, Defenders and
Inter-generation Solidarity Jadranka Kosor, ministers, MP`s and heads
of many defenders` associations, as well as political parties. The
procession also included Vukovar citizens, who walked in silence along
with numerous pilgrims from all parts of Croatia and other countries.

The procession set out for the city streets towards the Memorial
cemetery of Croatian Homeland War victims where state and other
delegations will lay down wreaths and light up candles for the killed
and injured Croatian defenders and civilians of Serbian aggression of
Vukovar.

Mass for all killed and missing people of the Homeland War will be
headed by the president of the Croatian Bishop`s Conference and
Djakovo and Srijem Bishop, msgr, Marin Srakic in the Saint Philip and
Jacob`s church.

Remembering 1,624 killed

According to date of Vukovar hospital, 1,624 persons were killed
during the Serbian aggression, 905 of which were killed before the
city`s defence crashed, including 12 children. The hospital has
records of 1,219 persons being injured, including 30 children.

August 25, 1991 is a date remembered by all Vukovar citizens. This is
when members of former Yugoslav People`s Arm (JNA) and Serbian
paramilitary units started a general tank-infantry attack and the
battle for Vukovar ended on November 18. The city`s defence was
crushed. Vukovar was defended by 1,800 members of the People`s Guard
Assembly (ZNG), police members and Croatian Defence Forces (HOS)
volunteers, who assembled the 204th Vukovar brigade of the Croatian
Army (HV).

Serbs imprisoned 7,000 Croatian defenders in concentration camps,
which also included civilians. 22,000 Croats and citizens of other non-
Serbian nationality were banished form the city.

The fate of 487 Croatian defenders is still not certain.
