Critical Announcements for CM MMX!

A note from the producers:
It's that time again, time to go Critical, time to bring you yesterday's technology today with Critical Massive MMX - The World of Tomorrow (a futuristic retrospective or, as all the cool hep cats are calling it, a Futurespective).

As you all gear up for this years massive Critical Massive, the biggest ever, there are a few things that the producers would like you to know:

1. Two key changes to the services this year that you should be aware of. First, there will be no access to the shower rooms this year so bring your solar shower if you want to be clean, there is one outdoor shower on site that will be available at the producers discretion based on how drenched the surrounding camping areas become so even it may be closed at times. Second, there will be no recycling provided but there will be compost; so, pack it in pack it out except for food waste.

2. We now have on site parking! Yeah! There is now a parking area on site, it is still limited so please carpool. The biggest difference this year is that we will not be parking all over the site but in a single consolidated location. What does this mean for you? It means that we won't have vehicles littered all over the site, it also means that your car will be in the parking area NOT at your camp site. If you need to have your vehicle at your camp site then you need to fill out the vehicle registration form at www.criticalmassive.org/camping.shtml  Let me reiterate: Any vehicle, of any size, that is not registered prior to the event will be parked in the common parking area.

3. This coming Wednesday, 5/12, is the next public meeting about Critical. Have questions, suggestions, want to help out, just want to see the rest of us stumble over ourselves at a meeting? Come on down to the Siren Tavern on 4th Ave. South at 7PM and check it out.

4. Theme Camp and Vehicle registration. The deadline is June 15th, if you want to be included in the maps, schedules, and burner's field guide you must have submitted by 6/15. If you don't you may have to set up your theme camp in the parking area.

It's less then twelve weeks until we rock it (or, in keeping with the MMX theme, until we rocket)!

In Futuristic Retrospection,
Your Humble Producers

Art Grants Still Available:

MICROGRANTS

*Microgrants, capped at $100, are intended to encourage art throughout the event in ways not typically thought of for art grants. Umbrella Favela (from CM'08) is a delightful example of the kind of project we're interested in for microgrants: inexpensive, with high wow factor.

** Please note that Microgrant submission requests close once the entire Microgrant budget is allocated, but no later than July 1st, 2010. Given the expectation of a smaller time commitment for these projects, we will accept Microgrant applications up to three weeks prior to the event, as long as the Microgrant budget is not entirely allocated. Any Microgrant applications submitted during the initial submission period will be reviewed in that same time frame, with submissions after the initial period being reviewed as they come in.

To apply:

Email a brief description and budget (no more than one page required) to artg...@ignitionnw.org.

REFURBS

*Refurb Art Grants are intended to support the renewal and exhibition of existing Works at Critical Massive by providing awards for minor repairs, fueling flame effects and/or transportation to Critical Massive. Maximum award for Refurb Art Grants is $200.

* Please note that Refurb Art Grant submission requests close once the entire Refurb budget is allocated, but no later than June 1st to allow the Critical Massive Production Team time to place all art submissions. Any Refurb Art Grant applications submitted during the initial submission period will be reviewed in that same time frame, with submissions after the initial period being reviewed as they come in.

To apply

Email description of piece including dimensions, placement conditions (dark / quiet / not under trees, etc) and amount requested. As applicable, please outline repairs, fuel needs, and/or transportation costs. If your project includes fuel/flame effects please include your safety, fuel storage and environmental impact/LNT plan. Email to artg...@ignitionnw.org.

Thanks!

Art Grant Committee

Gems from the Emerald Cru:

The Earth Guardians have compiled some really helpful tips and tricks for making LNT/Green Burns fun and sexy! Initiate and practice these skills and you will be able to create some kick-ass social and environmental art!

Principles of Leave No Trace (LNT)

website: http://www.lnt.org .

1. Plan Ahead and Prepare

2. Travel and Camp on Durable Surfaces
3. Dispose of Waste Properly

4. Minimize Campfire Impacts

5. Be Considerate of Other Visitors

6. Leave What You Find

7. Respect Wildlife

For Green Man 2007, we developed some additional Green Principles to help you think green, even amongst the gray and brown. These are about the effect your decisions have on the environment and how to choose the least harmful option.

THE GREEN PRINCIPLES

  1. Rethink What We Need to Thrive and Reduce What We Purchase & Bring
  2. Conserve Energy & Reduce the Use of Fossil Fuels
  3. Reuse Materials from Year to Year
  4. Recycle Everything Else with a Goal of Zero Waste
  5. Coordinate with Neighbors to Share Resources
  6. Respect the Environment

Top Ten LNT and Green reminders:

  1. Be a LNT good neighbor, lend a hand, share clean energy, carry a MOOP bag.
  2. Prepare a leave no trace & a green plan.
  3. Respect, rethink, reduce, reuse, precycle, recyle and restore!
  4. If it doesn't come out of your body it doesn't go into the potty.
  5. Conserve energy & use alternative energy sources (solar, wind, biodiesel).
  6. Never let it hit the ground (including grey water & cigarette butts), clean as you go! & secure items from the wind.
  7. Initiate a neighborhood MOOP sweep! Grid your area before you leave.
  8. Give yourself, not gifts that are likely to become MOOP
  9. Prepare for the hungry wind - secure your load, especially your trash
  10. Volunteer for clean up with DPW & participate in eco-restoration projects year round!

These basics set the foundation for thinking and doing environmental and community heroics! Applying these principles and tips to your preparations and participation during the event in the forest, desert, resort, beach, etc. will make for a kinder, gentler, sexier experience for everyone...and will give your DPW/sweep team more time to drink and get into trouble.

Combining both LNT principles and Greening principles is a good way to address the different aspects of awareness before, during, and after the event. Sharing these with your participants – whether they’re volunteers, veterans, or virgins – will instigate some interesting conversations and possibly some crafty goings-on.
