Hello all,

My name is Matthew McRae and I am Jenny’s assistant.  The police asked Jenny to pass on this note to you – she is out of town, and so I am sending it out on her behalf.

Best,

Notice to Participants in the Critical Mass Bicycle Ride -- Friday, August 25, 2006

The Winnipeg Police Service recognizes the objective of Critical Mass – to celebrate cycling as an environmentally-friendly alternative to driving.  The primary responsibility of the Police Service is to protect public safety of all citizens.  Our officers have responsibilities to ensure safe and efficient movement of all cyclists, vehicles and pedestrians, as well as emergency vehicles.  To accomplish both the goals of riders and police, these instructions are being provided to you prior to commencement of the ride.

The Highway Traffic Act requires participants to:

Obey traffic laws, traffic control devices, and police instructions

Stay to the right side of the road

Leave at least one lane of traffic clear for the free passage of other vehicles

At intersections where the group enters on a green light, but the light changes to red prior to the group clearing the intersection: the group may continue through, provided they do so with police escort.  Police will control opposing traffic in such circumstances.  Riders who attempt to control traffic will be in violation of law, and will be issued with an offence notice.

All laws will be enforced by police to ensure a safe, peaceful and lawful ride that respects the rights and freedoms of all other citizens legally using the roadway and sidewalks.
