Hello peeps - let me know who can investigate work effort below on
the possibility of integrating some of our infrastructure with
openId? Maybe one (or more) person can volunteer for each area below
1) mediaWiki 2) wordpress 3) googlegroups/acct.
Thanks,
Deborah
Chad brought this up recently on a community working group call, and
wanted to see who wanted to do the homework here:
We have established 3 key areas of "Infrastructure" that will likely
remain go-forward (there are others too, but for now, just focusing on
these):
1. Our wiki (mediaWiki) -
2. Our website (wordpress 3.0)
3. Google groups - used for task/project collaboration, listserv-
email, and communication/notices
*For some, we also have
crisiscommons.org emails that are on a gmail
platform.
To access these now, you need 3 different ids/accounts. It would be
great if they could be linked to openID, which would ease the pain of
moving between sites, but with a single-id, we could also start to lay
the basis for a reliable user-registry (read volunteer
registry)....baby steps however....Also, openId works with a lot of
other tools that our 'community' uses, like facebook, twitter, etc.
Here is what I have.
1. Wordpress has plugin:
http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/openid/
2. Mediawiki:
http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Extension:OpenID
3. Google does too:
http://code.google.com/apis/accounts/docs/OpenID.html
*We are also looking at introducing basecamp at some mini level for
core-task-management for now, this also uses openId.
These would be some ideas to consider when doing the evaluation, but
others can be 'added':
1. Ease of setup: Configuration vs. programming extensions?
2. What to do to convert existing users over?
3. Need to actually support both (some people will not want to use an
openid, see basecamp which allows signin of either 37signals id or
openid).
4. How is administration and user roles of the tool established?
5. What would be the steps/effort?
6. What would be the administration effort going forward? (ie,
recovery, revocation, etc.).
7. What would be the user experience?
