Hey Spike,

I am cc-ing CCIWG. What we need out of this is someone (could be you to lead-coord?) to determine proper criteria and process for which CC EC2 credits are distributed-used and evaluated, since distribution implies almost an implied endorsement, and that could get tricky.  I don't believe they are finite, and we should ensure that the solutions hosted align with our principles too (ie, opensource with a stewardship model in place to sustain it and openness) to make optimal use of finite resources, that we understand the partnership model of the org or group we are doing this for, or understand how it will be something new-maintained going forward so we can revoke it if it goes dormant. (rss feeds anyone?) Organizations that have gaps in their own operations, for instance, and are looking for freebies, would be something the criteria and a review process should uncover.  Peoplefinder moved to google hosting as ownership was transferred, a better endstate, for example. Considerations for administration (how it is distributed) need to be considered too.

Can you start to draft some of this for collaborative discussion?

Thanks,

Deborah Shaddon

Andrew,

There is a project that requires hosting.

I do not know how to set the facilities required on the EC2.

Please help!

Thanks
Spike

This info is more for the benefit of Spike and Heather, as we continue to look into hosting for the website (www.reliefoversight.org), and confirm that we can get CrisisCommons to host this for us through their existing Amazon account.

I sent a longer email, and Luke, Ben and I are discussing via IRC: we are talking about whether or not it makes sense for one or more of us to be on the conference call tomorrow - not to get more volunteers, which we're not ready to handle yet, but to update CrisisCommons on what we're up to.

I found this link, which contains old information: http://wiki.crisiscommons.org/wiki/Disaster_Accountability_Public_Database

I'm going to work with Ben and Luke on getting this information updated over the next few days - week.

Thanks,
David

I'm also going to copy Heather on this, as I think she may be able to provide us with this information.

Once we have confirmed that we have some hosting space lined up, I'm wondering if I can get some details on the actual hosting, and if we could have SSH access. Some questions we'll need to have answered:
- FTP information?
- SSH information? (if possible)
-- If so, can we install things onto it, if we need it, like PHP packages, etc...?
- Database information?
- What instance size will this be running on? m1.small or something larger?

Will the server have its own public IP address?

Thanks a ton,
David

Hi David,

a) We need to ask CrisisCommons about the server space: I'll start by asking Spike.  Hi Spike!  Ben is asking whether he can use some of the CrisisCommons Amazon space for the DisasterAccountability site - I'm not sure who to start asking for this and how, so any pointers on this would be very very useful.

b) Project management. Ben's given you a decent spec for what he wants, and you and Luke seem to know what's needed, so this shouldn't need a lot of management oversight.  Just keep me in the loop and ask for help whenever you need it.

Thanks,

Sj.

Sara,
Ben told me that Crisis Commons was willing to provide free webhosting, and that he wanted to move away from his existing webhosting at Slice Host. Would it be possible to go ahead and get this set up? It would be great to be able to actively develop on the new web hosting, without having to work on the production website.

Also, heh... thanks for the Project Manager nomination! :D I guess I'll try to do my best. At the same time, seeing that I've never "managed" a project with a team before, and from what I can tell about Luke, and knowing how my schedule can be sometimes, I think it would make sense to pull Luke in on a lot of this as well (so I'm copying him on this email).

Thanks,
David

Yes Deborah,

I will try and write something.

In the meantime, we've got a group for keen developers anxious to try out a new tool who have been waiting patiently *on us* for of our days to provide web hosting. If the Infrastructure WG are not able to do this then what are we for?

If we cannot provide resources *quickly* then people will either go away and host it themselves or just go way.

As far as I know, the only person who has the rights and knowledge to dole out EC2 resources is Andrew. This is (I'm really struggling here not to swear) totally unsustainable.

Sorry for tone of this message - we are letting our virtual campers down because we cannot provide them with the resources we promises.

Thanks Andrew, so we do have some distributed support, but more is needed as you suggest.  Who on this group wants to also share-play that role of administration (reliably)?.

Hey Spike, you should have all the access credentials for AWS as well from late in the Spring I believe.

We also need to be very cognizant of who an how we host data relatin g to privacy, liability, costs, etc.

Also, when does a project get shut down? We have 5 current instances of in limbo project taking up resources (ie credits)

I would love if 3 other people that have been fully involved, responsible and available to have the access credentials and knowledge to maintain everything. Just looking for those individuals to take it on. I'll count you as +1 :)

Yay bus factors!!

I would be interested in assisting with defining criteria to qualify
partner organizations for EC2 credits. Of course, details on how CC
and partner organizations currently access and use EC2 credits would
be helpful with this task.

I would also be interested in volunteering with administrative/
technical tasks related to infrastructure in general.

Hope to play my part in this community!
