Hi Crisis Mappers Community

My name is Leonardo March, I’m a video journalist with The Haitian Times (haitiantimes.com) . I’m currently working on a project on humanitarian technology and Haiti, and I’m tying to interview a crisis mapper who worked in the aftermath of the 2010 or/and 2021 earthquake in Haiti (preferably a Haitian person, but not a dealbreaker). I’m reaching out to this community hoping I would be able to connect to one of your members. Could you recommend someone, or pass on my information to them? Let me know if this is possible, and of any questions you might have.  The interview would take approximately 20 minutes, and will done via zoom.

Thanks in advance

Leonardo

It might be good to ask on the Humanitarian OpenStreetMap Team (HOT) mailing list, because it's likely that someone there could put you in touch with the Haiti OpenStreetMap mappers, and may also be able to suggest people to talk to.  The HOT mailing list is:

I believe that one does not need to be subscribed to the list to post, but if so, one can subscribe here:

That also has a link to past posts, including about the current HOT activity in response to the recent earthquake.

It also occurs to me that several people who work on the Sahana Eden emergency management software might know who was active in CrisisMappers at the time.  At least one of the current Sahana folks was in Haiti working for Oxfam and Nethope after the 2010 earthquake, and the Sahana CEO at the time was involved with CrisisMappers.  I have to drop offline now, but can look for contact information tomorrow if that would be useful.  One reason this might be relevant is that the CrisisMappers action in 2010 wasn't so much mapping as it was georeferencing tweets and SMS messages from people in Port-au-Prince.

But the HOT mailing list is, IMO, probably the first place to try, just because there are a lot of folks on the list who were around and mapping in 2010, and may have participated in the mapping response.

And you might end up wanting both information about how the Port-au-Prince region was mapped (in about a week), and about how the SMS messages / tweets were used to locate and get assistance to people.

Hi Pat, thanks for your ideas. I've read about the SMS messages/tweets program that was developed: pretty interesting.

I'll def take a look at the HOT mailing list. be well!
