I'm amazed at the quick thinking of all those involved in making this happen. Reid, you touched on some issues I read from the Times article on the limitations of Gmaps and the many hits. I'd be curious to hear what other ideas you all may be floating out there. I've been working on some PHP/MySQL backends for some simple map apps that tie into GIS pretty well. My javascripting is pretty poor but I think it's a start for my efforts. Here's one sample:

All the attributes of each location (including lat/long) are written to a MySQL database. These can then be streamed in to ArcGIS via an OLEDB connection with a MySQL ODBC driver. I'm curious to see how this would differ with PostGres but I'm deep into what I have at the moment.

But as far as the boom map goes, just having attributes of time, magnitude, or some other measure may allow further analysis (e.g. weighted averages, true triangulation, etc.).
