Dear CrisisCommons Founders, Core Team Members, and Camp Leads,
The Sloan Foundation had two goals in making this grant to the Wilson
Center: 1) to support the development of the relationships,
requirements, and shared understanding between the professional and
volunteer & technology communities in advance of crisis; and 2) to
support the creation and efficient running of crisis camps.
The Wilson Center's role was: 1) to serve as an incubator for Crisis
Commons the organization, offering institutional support while the
structure and governance was worked out; and 2) to conduct independent
research and policy analysis supporting lateral learning across
disciplines with broad benefits to the volunteer & technical
communities.
Over the last six months, it has become clear to the Sloan Foundation
that the current grant structure has had the opposite of its intended
effect; the over-centralization of funding has set up
counterproductive power dynamics. In close consultation, the Sloan
Foundation and Wilson Center have decided to restructure the grant,
shifting funds from central staff to supporting workstream priorities,
such as mission and governance/charter development. We hope that this
shift will send a clear message of inclusion.
We understand that there will be many questions and concerns regarding
the grant restructuring. We’d appreciate the opportunity to set up a
conference call with the Founders, Core Team Members, and global Camp
Leads to determine what makes the most sense for continued support and
collaboration; tentatively scheduled for Thursday, July 28, 2011 at 11
AM EDT (8 AM PDT; 10 AM CDT; 4 PM London; 5 PM Paris/Geneva; 10 PM
Bangkok). If you wish to participate on this call, please RSVP to
joe.fi...@wilsoncenter.org.
Sincerely,
David Rejeski
