Ifthe game is launched frequently from a number of different devices (so via the same log-in) in some circumstances it can be blocked for a 24 hour period. Just to be clear, are you able to launch now without this same error occurring?

@Neil BrockHi, I've got exactly the same problem with my FM23 very recently purchased via Xbox Gamepass. Is there something I can do about that issue, because I'm obviously not on an Early Access problem now... No answer from the Denuvo support, so maybe you can help me?

Users typically receive Denuvo driver error 2148204812 on their Windows machines whenever they try to launch a game, such as Pro Evolution Soccer 2018 or Football Manager 2018. Nonetheless, some users reported that they received the error not only when launching games but also regular applications.

First of all, one might think that the Denuvo driver is a system or app component that allows a better performance of certain hardware (this is usually the purpose of a driver[1] on a Windows computer). However, the Denuvo driver is actually a piece of software responsible for DRM (Digital Rights Management).

DRM is a type of protection measure that is implemented by software developers to prevent piracy and unsolicited tampering with certain files or components of a program. Thus, for an app to be launched, the driver is meant to be initiated as well.

Speaking of reasons, there are several of those why players see this error. First of all, it could be software conflict (namely, Valorant's Vanguard anti-cheat engine). Thus, uninstalling it could solve the issue. In other cases, the error could be a sign of software piracy. Many users who pirated games reported the error.

Additionally, users also experienced the same error code with a different message, namely, A certificate was explicitly revoked by its issuer. Error code 2148204812. In this instance, the root cause of the issue differs completely, although it also has to do with the incorrect verification process of a certificate within a certain app. This error is more common within corporate environments (there could be problems with the signature issuer), hence we are not going to focus on it.

If you are having a problem with a game or another application, on the other hand, several fixes could be useful to you. As evident, we will not discuss solutions for pirated versions of games, as we do not support or tolerate illegal software use.

Before you proceed with the steps below, we strongly recommend running a scan with powerful PC repair software FortectMac Washing Machine X9. It can fix the most common Windows issues, resolving BSODs, registry[2] errors, and other issues automatically.

Some users said that they started experiencing the error after a Windows update. In such a case, uninstalling the latest update could help you solve the issue. Keep in mind that this is not always possible due to time limitations. It is also not recommended to keep your system outdated due to software vulnerabilities,[3] so you should not consider this method as a permanent solution.

As we previously mentioned, if you are using an illegal version of an app or a game, you won't find answers for that here, and this method will not work for you. Otherwise, contacting the technical support of the game that is not launching is one of the best solutions you can get.

Update 08/11/2021: Denuvo has sent a statement to PC Gamer, confirming that domain issues are behind the downtime over the weekend. It didn't explicitly state that the problem domain had expired.

"A Denuvo domain was unreachable yesterday afternoon CET. The problem was fixed after we got notified from our automatic system control," a spokesperson said. "After the fix, there was no whatsoever restriction or limitation for the gamer. Denuvo is working to implement further improvements to avoid such downtime in the future."

Original story: If you tried to fire up a game on your PC this weekend, you may have run into the teeny tiny issue of it refusing to boot. It seems as though Denuvo's servers had a bit of a hiccup on November 7, rendering tons of games with the DRM technology temporarily unplayable.

Reports began flooding in on ResetEra and various Steam community pages, with many getting a "server not reachable" error when attempting to boot various games. The issue plagued recent big releases like Guardians of the Galaxy and Football Manager 2022, as well as games like Shadow of the Tomb Raider, Yakuza: Like a Dragon, and Persona 4 Golden (thanks, VGC).

For a bit of tech that is already fairly well-hated, situations like this don't help Denuvo's case. Both the ResetEra and Steam threads were filled with discontent for it, and the frustrations are incredibly valid when hiccups like this prevent you from playing your single-player, offline games.

Earlier this year saw even more disdain for Denuvo when it was discovered that pirated versions of Resident Evil Village apparently ran better because the lack of DRM was fixing its stuttering issues (Denuvo denied its software was the cause). More recently, Intel Alder Lake has run into issues with some Denuvo-enabled games refusing to boot on the new processors.

If you play a lot of games, especially AAA (triple-A) games, you might probably have come across a message that says Failed to Start Denuvo Driver, with an error code of 2148204812. This can occur on Windows 11, Windows 10 or older versions when launching certain games that require Denuvo anti-tamper technology.

If the error did disappear after you turned off the antivirus, it proves that it is somewhat blocking the Denuvo driver. In that case, you might want to exclude or whitelist any files that are part of the game.

I had high hopes of returning to Sonic Mania and slapping an Ars Approved sticker on my early-August review once its PC version launched. I figured, by then, the console editions would have received patches to a few noticeable glitches and a tidy PC port would seal the deal on an easy game recommendation.

Then I tried loading the Windows version of Sonic Mania while my Steam account was offline. That's when Sonic Mania informed me, in no uncertain terms, that "Steam user must be logged in to play this game."

Whether any fix to its online-authentication issue takes hours, days, or weeks is unclear at this point. But the same news post had less good news for anybody looking for a change of heart on Denuvo. The post simply described the game's Steam store page's failure to mention that Denuvo was a requirement as an "error." "We're fixing that now," the game's representative wrote, and sure enough, Sonic Mania's Steam store page now explicitly mentions Denuvo. (That same store page made no mention of Denuvo when the Steam version rose to the top of Steam's pre-sale charts throughout August.)
