Join the Global Partnership for Social Accountability on 30 April at 10:00 am (EST) for a webinar on how civil society organizations (CSOs) can close the gap between transparency and accountability. Albert van Zyl, Manager of Learning and Knowledge Development at the International Budget Partnership (IBP), will present a research paper based on a set of 21 case studies commissioned by IBP. His paper argues that CSOs play a more important role in bridging the gap between transparency and accountability than the literature recognizes.

Van Zyl's research aims to show that CSOs can bridge this gap in four main ways:

  1. by accessing, interpreting, and distributing information to multiple stakeholders in useable and accessible formats;
  2. by demanding accountability of government directly;
  3. by supporting and encouraging formal oversight actors to demand accountability (such as legislatures, auditors, judiciaries); and
  4. by supporting and encouraging other actors to demand accountability (such as executive insiders, political parties, donors).
