Dear Fryson,
While I totally agree with you on the condemnation of street vendors in Lilongwe, I feel the first thing you could have done is to explain briefly what is happening, what the vendors are doing, to enable cridoc colleaugues understand the situation. I believe very few are listening to the radio right now.
I really support your idea
Thank you

Fryson,
thanks for the suggestions and of course kick-starting the process. I also passed by the town in the afternoon and only to hear shouts and all sorts of insults but could not connect what was going on.
I agree with you to launch the campaign and request all women/girls to stay away from these stupid barbaric demons and see if they can sell anything and get a coin. Some of us men do not buy from them its the same women and girls they are abusing and harrasing. They have taken the law into their hands and thinks they are over and above the law.
I feel the Ministry of Gender should also seriously attend to this issue together with NGO GCN,HRCC, CSEC etc
Regards.

Colleagues,
Indeed it is saddening to see that we are going back 20 years in our levels of thinking and doing things. In this modern World, I wonder how people could do such things to our noble women, mothers, sisters and wives. How would they themselves feel seeing their mothers, wives, sisters, girlfriends etc being undressed by ill mannered and disgruntled people? Would they just watch and let them do that? We need action.
Friends from Mzuzu and Blantyre, how are things there.

Compatriots,
I am sensing that we seem to be heading for a campaigned that has not been well thought through and planned. I still have many questions unanswered on this matter although it is obviously a very important and urgent matter. To begin with, are we really confident that we have understood the root causes of these barbaric acts and ready to face vendors? Have we adequately engaged the vending community on the matter and are convinced that these are the culprits? Do we really think that parading our women on the streets under police escort (as I have heard from other quarters) is the best approach is solving the problem? What will happen after the march, will police escort each participating woman to their home? Really?
For some reason, I have been out of news lately therefore my views could be wrong, barbaric or simply too late in coming. But sensing from the few e-mails I have read and radio interviews I have listened to, it seems that the civil society is not yet organized on this matter although the intention is good. Akuluakulu, lero lomwe adadetsa m’nthengu. Komanso, gona mkuphe sali patali. All we need are a few more days for planning, then we act. Not so?
Why can’t we discuss this matter first, and act with confidence after we get support from the grassroots? Remember, masses are fast losing trust in us because we are very fast communicating lack proper coordination and planning to them. We seem to always act on impulse rather than reason. We seem to be too quick to make decisions – leaving out the people on the ground.
Don’t forget that government went to Malangalanga streets after the 20 July incidents and some of us saw that they had missed the point by thinking that promising loans to vendors would appease them. I immediately made my point known to some senior government officials but I think it was too late since speeches had already been made. My view was that they needed to analyse the matter and arrive at tangible solutions to the real problems that street people are facing. And you remember what happened two weeks ago on the same street? I don’t live in Lilongwe but I hear the vendors have now grown roots and can’t be pushed. Do we want to repeat this mistake??? Really???
History shows that streets, worldwide, are NOT easy places to handle especially when kwachas are few. Do we remember that Hitler was a call-boy when Germany (Weimar Republic that lasted in 1933) was weak and poor? Do we remember that the Arab riots started in Tunisian streets by a young-man who was angry and hopeless from unemployment? Have we really understood the root to Malangalanga events??? If you have, fine. BUT, I am not ashamed to declare that I have NOT.
I support you, but I am really concerned about the ABSENCE of a plan on the matter. If we have a plan, who developed it and where is it? If we really don’t have it then we are simply driving our country into an abyss – one day we will wish we had done better. Failing to plan is simply planning to fail. We are just taking chances.
Once again, I personally support the campaign BUT chances are high that we will fail Malawians again. I can already sense anger and “partisanship” in the campaign name. Should we really take such an anger-packed campaign to an equally angry people on the street? I feel that Malawi already has enough problems right now, let’s not create another one by simply failing to understand issues and plan properly. All we need are a few days. Just a few more days - and I am passionate about this!
This is just my humble opinion. Let others say what they think. As I said, I have been out of news lately – forgive my ignorance if the matters I am raising here don’t make sense to the commonwealth on this forum. I just feel that my opinion should be shared to my countrymen. Cry My Beloved Country! Think twice on this serious matter.
Good night,
Kent
I trust that we all share strong opinion in condemning the acts of public undressing of women whatever the intention. Let us imagine that the undressed was their mother or sister or even aunt. How would perpetrators feel their sight.

It appears that the battle line is drawn between one group of vendors on one
hand and Police, Lilongwe City Council and another group of vendors on the
other. Are civil society playing a role in this matter or we will wait for
the battle to ensue and then jump into a crisis - to douse the fire?
My I propose that our leaders should take this matter seriously before the
street battles ensue. Prevention is better than cure. We will look wise to
prevent the worse to happen in this scenario. Talking after wrongs have
been is nothing but a display of cowardice.
May I propose that in the short term CSOs in Lilongwe, like Mkamwini Wanga
Lucky Crown Mbewe's, Frackson Chodzi's youth movements, etc and the National
Youth Council, move into the street and civic educate the adamant vendors on
the benefits of trading in designated areas. They could also work with the
Lilongwe City Council and the Police to ensure that the rights of the youth
are protected as they implement this clean-up campaign. My fear is that we
could be endangering the lives of innocent youth and women further should
this exercise go abortive.
It's a great exercise but we need to make sure that life is not lost in the
process of implementing it. Left alone the Police will use live bullets when
cornered. We have lives of young people to protect here. My heart also
goes to the innocent women and girls who might be hurt as a result of this
exercise. Can women groups participate in this exercise as well?
Good day,

Frackson,
Unfortunately, I delegated my participation. Please pick it up and get the crossroads meeting talking about it. We will support you electronically.
Good day,
Kent
Oh! That’s great, maybe it’s now a matter of having a collective voice from a wider circle. Can the CSOs discuss the strategy during the CSO meeting at Crossroads today? Unfortunately, I delegated so I can’t be part of the discussion.
BUT this should get us thinking about the long-term plans for our youth. Since the MYP disappeared we, as a nation, have not thought about important section of our population. We learnt the MYP concept from Ghana in the 60s, abused it, dismantled it and forgot about the youth altogether. Ghanaians have maintained the “MYP” concept even after the 1990 Velvet Revolution - that contributed enormously to the democratic Africa in the early 1990s. Are we surprised that Ghana will not need AID in 10-15 years time?? The youth have remained part of the national economy despite the “freedoms” we are all preaching about sometimes wrongly. In my view YEDF or whatever we call it is nothing but “political pocket money” for DPP politicians.
My prayer is that youth issues must be on the campaign trail for the 2014 elections. Candidates or parties who are empty on youth development strategies should not be given a gate pass to Capital Hill.
Of course I don’t want to be seen as if I am advocating for “Youth Presidential or Parliamentary Candidates” because I see this thinking as very erroneous because you don’t have to be a youth for you to articulate youth issues. History has proved that bad or good leaders come from any age group. I am talking of candidates who understanding the youth world – thank God if we have some youth who understanding their own world – let’s encourage them to run for office!
Good day
Kent
