Dear all,
I have gone through the Cashgate report. However, I feel that someone is trying to play games with Malawians. I have the following questions:
1. Why did it take so long for the two governments (PP & DPP) to release this report that sounds simple and straight forward to me? What is in this report that the whole government machinery was failing to release?
2. It is clear from the reading that politicians were involved in the whole saga. But, where are their names? All I can see are civil servants and those who stood for MP during the tripartite elections? Why?
3. Why is it that the looting begins soon after the JB government takes over the reins of power in April? How did they learn the looting tasks in so short a time? By the way, should we really say that the looting started with the JB government? It appears to me that the JB government found the looting already at its peak! This only shows that we still have more work to be done. Those who came before JB’s incompetent government were equally incompetent and predators of tax payers money. I hope that government will not waste any more time but go straight into 2005-2012 investigations now that the Germans have already paid the auditor.
I see more things in this report than what they have given us.
Good day,
Kent
.
Yes indeed, we need to put in place laws, policies and systems that must begin to stem the wave of theft in our country. I want us to consider the issue of political party funding and election campaign funding. I think that giving out of “gifts”, “arms” prior to and during electioneering season must be stopped with immediate effect. This report is making it clear that the Cashgate was an electioneering strategy for our politicians. Let’s put the right laws and systems in place. Let the up-coming all-inclusive national conference put this matter on the agenda. We need action, action and action henceforth.
Good day,
Kent

Indeed, we continue to cry for our Malawi.
However, we are all a sum total of what Malawi has become. Whether we are directly, indirectly or silently or loudly involved. I guess there is no system that is better than the people within that system. We have tolerated certain levels of filth and mediocrity to an extent that corruption is applauded. Theft has become incarcated in us so much so that we become so agitated at naming and shaming rather than holding each other accountable. My goodness!
Indeed, the world does not become bad from the acts of bad and evil men, but also by the inactivity of those good intentioned men of integrity. Some people have been allowed to become a menace to society from stolen wealth. The sound of reason unfortunately has died a natural death. I am not sure what future generations will think of us.
Not to sound too pessimistic though, we could be the small voice shouting in the wilderness! But we need more unity and uniformity in this huge fight. It cannot be left in the hands of a few noble people. It should be a multi-stakeholder process. And there is no spectator! We should rise above the rhetoric and fumes of holy anger to action-oriented people. Also we need to practice what we preach.

Kent,
You raise very important questions and these in deed are bothering many. However, giving it a different context: stealing of public funds has been there from time immemorial in Malawi. The systems and structures to protect public funds have been manipulated by those who knew them for personal reasons. Given that all governments- have in one way or another enriched themselves be their political leaders or government technicians, it has not been a surprise to some of us to see, for example political parties in power getting filthy rich and once out of power, sinfully poor. The looting is an answer to sudden changes of fortune of those once in government or those in government.
So, just like in Oscar Pistorius trial, the world was expecting "punishment" that is damning like the biblical hell with fire. But Alas! Judge Masipa was more inclined to "correctional" model of punishment against the main stream of angry watchers. Whether this case is going to be appealed and later re-sentencing is done, one thing is clear- people's expectations were completely thwarted.
Why this example: we have been angry, tell us the names of looters, bring back our money, punish them severely. But the work is left in the hands of politicians who lead the state apparatuses. They will protect their interests forever. There should not be anything academic out of it. The Malawi we live in is driven by politics of survival and trying to clean it, you get cleaned by the system.
May be this is a way forward: forensic audit must continue to way back even if we want to choose till 1964. But another complementary route is to design systems, laws and policies that must militate against this malpractice. Many souls have died with curable diseases when funds for drugs have been stolen. So many vices in Malawi.
Finally laws to deal with "a get-rich quick syndrome" must be enacted. Un explainable wealth must be investigated by right institutions and within prescribed laws. Minus this. even after forensic audit from 1964 is completed, it will be vague and materially useless to the life struggles of Malawians.
I cry for our country once full of hard, honest, reliable, empathetic and satisified citizens. Today insatiable desire for looting and poshy cars and phones not overlooking individual houses like BICC are killing the nation.
Chris Chisoni
Chris,
Imagine how many people have died as a result of this massive stealing of funds and yet these people will only be slapped with a three-year jail term! Are these people not fit for a firing squad in eastern countries or crocodile meat for the old Malawi? I think that some things we stopped doing must come back otherwise this country will not develop. How can a person (my former boss) who took away and launder a whooping MK63,000,000 get a 3-year jail term! Is this not just a slap on the wrist? My foot! We Malawians, will we ever get serious on anything?? Can’t we see how many innocent Malawians are dying in our hospitals of curable illnesses? And we can be oblivious to such tragedies caused by this team of crooked people? We are doing all this in the name of “human rights”? Would Americans and the British do this in their “democratic” countries? Is this not a failed state?? I am angry!
