Who said we cannot do without South Africa. I believe we can do. But I think we cannot not do without India or China. The things that we buy from South Africa are mostly for urban which we can source from other markets but all soap brands mostly used by rural masses have India parenthood and small things that are sold in rural areas are china and India not SA. Further, most things we buy from SA are not originally SA made but they are just repackaged there. There are also better supermarkets, for instance, India BAZAAR that are far much better and can easily replace GAME, Shoprite et al. All electronics are from Europe or far East and there is no SA brand that you can mention. Additionally, English Premier league is played in UK and SA just import it and sell to us through DSTV so others can do. Let us boycott SA products, UNILIVER is not a South African company it is a European Multinational company with plants in SA, Kenya, India and many other countries, it is only that we are served by SA but we can as well be served by India. Finally, let me give you my example to show that we can do it, I watch pay digital TV, Zuku which is Kenyan, I drive a Japanese vehicle, my tablet is G'FIVE which Chinese, LAPTOP is HP which is American, my furniture is from Malawi, I am studying with a Mauritian university using Indian E-learning platform.  My TV is Japanese, my clothes are mostly from far east, my fridge is from Game but I bought it with my money and I can buy from elsewhere e.g. Dubai, China, Japan et al (but I also guess it is not SA made). I eat potato from Mitundu and Dedza, rice from Karonga and KK, Maize from Lilongwe, beef and chicken from Mzimba and LL, Fish from lake Malawi. I drink Carlsberg from Danish company and Coke and Fanta from  American company. Whatever small things from SA we can buy from Indian market or china. All clothes sold in PEP are made in China and few are made by Nigerian clothes companies in SA. So we can do without SA.
South Africa is mutually benefiting from us because we offer them market yet they don’t much of our products so they must not make a fuss of it.

Oswald,
I can't agree with you more, We can very well do even better without SA products. Your analysis has said it all.
Let's show them that we have values also.

But the problem may be that those SA companies employ Malawians who would be rendered jobless in this highest unemployment country and the men and women who survive on importing goods from SA for re-sale in Malawi will also suffer so much. So the picture is not only about YOU, take it more wholesale. I don't really know!!

Staphiel,

The economic theory in this global village is that, if SA companies close shop, there will be unserved market as such, other entrepreneurs will come in to serve Malawi market and they too will employ people. Of course they may not be the same but still others will be employed. But also few people employed by SA companies can venture into same industries as entrepreneurs. Life will never stop.

Best

I recognise these as brilliant ideas but rather misaplaced without a clear analysis of our context. Malawi as a country has flpws we needed to address first before starting the call for boycotts of RSA products especially in a year of hunger loke this one. Can we do a better analysis of the worst looser if we boycott their products when this year we will even need chimanga and other foodstuffs.

I suspect wisdom needs to prevail and never copy cut what Mozambique and Zim are doing. In my.analysis I suspect a stronger message has been sent and we need to continue reminding them. I also feel that these pefpetuators of violence take it that they have nothing to loose since they are those people who dont see the impact of even the current economic boom in South Africa tbey think or believe they have already lost so ome wonders what difference will tbe boycott make in tneir lives.

Hey,
Please note that u can't compare the meagre so called employment in shoprite and Game with even just a single life we lose at the hands of the overzelous SAs. Game, Shoprite and PEP can be easily replaced. And the so called importation I can assure you that we have thousands of altanatives, We can do away with SA.

In fact most of the things that are sold by South African chain stores are procured in China and Hong Kong

Even the furniture sold in Game is Chinese. So are the electrical goods. Even multi choice decoders are not made in SA!
