Amanda,
I know that you are interested in trying to research the Little family
and are already in contact with Chris Morley, however I wonder whether
you can add anything to the following:

Marriage Record: St Marys Church, Cricklade
1931 August 15th Ambrose James LITTLE 24 Bachelor
Labourer Latton Wharfe Father: William Little
(deceased) Shepherd (Latton)
Rosetta Mary NEW 21 Spinster 56 High
Street Edward Charles New Licensed
Hawker Cricklade
after Banns Owen F Bell Rector
Witnesses: E C New, A Hibberd

What we know is that William Little had died between 1907 and 1931
when Ambrose, his son married. Ambrose was born 1907, which suggests
that William was born before 1891. I also know that William had
another son, George Edward Little, who was married in 1935 when he was
24. This means that William died sometime between 1911 and 1931.
George lived in the High Street, Cricklade and married a lady from
Latton.

Can you add anything such as where William might have been born, when
he died, the name of his wife (have you applied for the GRO
Certificate for Ambrose, which would provide this info), etc?

I've been doing a little more digging and think that you will really
need Ambrose's birth certificate to determine the right William Little
to follow back. I have a suspicion that the mother's maiden name is
Aldbrow but this needs confirming or otherwise!

Hello David,

Thank you so much for taking the trouble of finding out about my great
grandfather. I had difficulty trying to locate the correct William
Little myself and when I have more time, I will track down a copy of
my grandfather's birth certificate. The follow up on a possible
maiden surname of Aldbrow for my great grandmother is great. I really
appreciate all the interest you have shown and if anything else should
come up, I'd be delighted to know.

Best wishes, Amanda.

Amanda,

OK, I think that we have cracked your William Little! I took the
liberty of contacting Swindon Registry Office and without actually
ordering a certificate they have confirmed that the MMN is Elbrow.
I've copied their response below, just in case you actually wanted to
go ahead and order it:

"Ambrose James Little
We do have a birth entry for the above gentleman in our Registers, our
ref. 113/455. Mother's maiden name is Elbrow. The cost of the
certificate is £7 and please make your cheque payable to Swindon
Borough Council. Please put your request in writing, quoting the
above reference, enclose your cheque for £7. Our postal address is
The Register Office, Aspen House, lst floor, Temple Street, Swindon,
Wilts SN1 1SQ (TEL: 01793-521734). Please quote your full address
when replying so that we can send the Certificate to you. Many
thanks."

What this means is that his father was William Little, born Broad
Hinton who appears in the 1901 Census as a Shepherd. He married a
Phoebe Curtis Elbrow (or similar surname!) in the 3rd Qtr 1894:
Marriages Sep 1894
Aldbrow Phoebe Curtis Marlborough 5a 143
Little William Marlborough 5a 143

You will find that I have uploaded the image for you as a file.

With this breakthrough it is now possible to trace your line (both
William & Phoebe) right back through the censuses - let me know if you
would like further details!
