Hi Michael,

I’m a web application developer and would happily create a website database system which would allow multiple people to enter data.

After that – the data could be exported and imported into the database system that the OPC scheme are creating.

I have spare web and database servers that could be used whilst everyone is loading data. Alternatively I’d be happy to work on webspace that you have – as long as it supports PHP & MySQL.

Would that help speed things up?

Tony

Subject: St Sampson parish registers

Hello folks

Perhaps I could explain the background to this project.  I bought all the available microfiche of the parish registers from the Wiltshire RO with a view to transcribing the lot and placing them online free-to-view.  Initially they are going on John Pope's web site as texts but in the longer term they will be uploaded to a searchable online db being created (I hope) by the lady running the Wilts OPC scheme.  They will be kept as texts though, as Google will search the texts but not the database.

The St Sampson BTs are also available, but on 16mm film.  I hired these thru' my local LDS FHC, who also very kindly let me bring their one remaining 16mm film reader home.  But both the film and the reader were pretty crappy.  As you can see from the first lot of baptisms (just gone online), there are so many holes that the whole thing is pretty hopeless.   Someone told me once, I think, that there is a handwritten transcript of the BTs.  It would be nice to have a copy of this.

Once I have worked my way thru' all the microfiche, it is my intention to go back and review all unreadable or uncertain entries, perhaps with the aid of the IGI.  The IGI is missing some entries and has others that are not on the parish register microfiche.  Perhaps these additional entries are taken from the BTs.  The IGI does not contain all the information that is on the parish register anyway.

There are two parishes in Cricklade.  The other one, St Marys, has had its registers transcribed and they are on sale as booklets.  However, I don't think they are going to let me copy their data and put it online free-to-view.  The only way is to buy the fiche for St Marys and do a fresh transcript.  As all my own ancestors seem to be St Sampson people, I don't feel inclined to do that.

If anyone feels like helping out, then I have a proposal.  As both the IGI and my transcripts are online, someone else could check my work.  In fact, I believe the museum has its own transcript, which could be used for the same purpose.

If anyone feels like helping out - who knows what we could do, as a group.

Hello Tony

Thank you.  Although I have been running online transcription projects for about ten years now, my expertise is in recruiting and organising - not the technical side of databases and web sites.  So I have passed your address on to Susan Penter, who is the lady running the Wilts OPC scheme.

Hi Micheal
Well done on your project.  It certainly is a massive undertaking. When I saw your email it inspired me to contact you.  I am a novice at family research so I was wondering if you or anyone you know has researched the following names in Cricklade or are related to me.

My great grandmother was Louisa Watts born in Cricklade in 1862.  Her father was James Watts (b. 1829) married Elizabeth Wilkinson (b. 1828)  Elizabeth had also married John Waren 15 October 1851 St Marys Cricklade.  Louisa therefor had 3 full siblings and 3 half siblings. ( Watts and Warren)

The names that I am looking for that may still be in Cricklade are Watts, Warren, Wilkinson, Coole and  Peachey.

The info I have provided is just an outline as I didnt want to bog you down intially with lots of detail.  I am hoping to find living relations who may have some family info and of course someone may wish to know all about Louisa Watts.

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated

Regards
Robyn Howse

P.S.  The Howse name comes from Eisey Manor farm.  Francis Howse (Born at Eisey in 1857) was my great grandfather who married Louisa Watts.  Francis's line has been fairly well covered.  They immigrated to New Zealand which is where I am from.

P.S  I would like to join a historical group from Cricklade so could you please let me know of any.  Thanks

Hi Michael

What a fantastic job you have done to make all this information freely available.  Well done.  I joined the Cricklade Historical Society some months ago and am so pleased to see it is still active.

Having looked at the website, it would be great to perhaps have an area where members could list the family names they are researching, creating a communication gateway to enable others to make contact.

My own interests are in the Berriman (Berryman), Price, Herbert and Nott families.  A John Berriman married Tamar Nott, alias Price, of Cricklade St. Sampson on 11th Nov 1770 at Minety.  In the Bishops Marriage Licence Bonds her name is recorded as Tamar Nott alias Herbert (Braden, Cricklade. Spin).  I have absolutely no information on this John Berriman.  Tamar (d. 1815) was the daughter of John Nott and sister of Captain Edward Herbert.  John Nott married Beata Price alias Herbert on his deathbed at Cricklade St Samson in 1763.

John and Tamar’s son, John (b. Braydon 1775 d. 1855) and lived with his family at Whitehall Farm in the tything of Wedhill, Cricklade.

I would be very interested in hearing any information anyone out there can add.  I have already accessed pretty comprehensive information on the Nott family that is available online.

Many thanks.

Regards

Graham Watts
