Just posting our Programme of Events for the year in case anyone is
interested!

2009

Wednesday 18th March War in the Air 1914-1918
David Sweet gives an overview of the early development of aircraft for
use in warfare. In 1914 the airplane was less than 11 years old and
were slow, flimsy and with barely enough power to lift the pilot let
alone a passenger!

Wednesday 15th April Echoes of Malmesbury
Bob Browning tells us the story of E. K. Cole, which originally
manufactured wireless sets. With the outbreak of war in 1939 EKCO
resources were directed towards military production and a factory was
opened at Malmesbury to produce specialised radar and military radio
equipment.

Wednesday 20th May Between Two Rivers (Severn to
Thames)
In an illustrated talk, Bruce Hall MBE covers the rise and fall of
what is now known as the Cotswold Canal, which opened in 1779. Bruce
also outlines the preservation work of the Cotswold Canal Trust, of
which he is the Chairman.

Wednesday 17th June Swindon Railway Works
Our own Ron Poole will give an illustrated talk which will focus on
some of the social aspects of working at Swindon’s GWR Works.

Wednesday 15th July Coach Outing
Keep this day free in your diary—we are planning to have an outing!
Details to follow.

Sunday 16th August Transport in and around Cricklade
Join us on an accompanied afternoon walk around Cricklade and learn
about the various methods of transport that used to exist in the
Cricklade area. Tea is served afterwards at the Museum.

Wednesday 16th September Aliases, Errors, Oddities, & Strange Beliefs
This talk covers everything from aliases used for various reasons and
alternative names in records, errors in printed books (including
scholastic ones), an extended search for a marriage, how our speaker
discovered a drunken bigamist and a lady who believed in fairies. Doug
Jackson shares with us some of his work mostly based on his own
family.

Saturday 26th September Autumn Fayre
Support the Society at this important annual fund raising event. Make
a date in your diary!

Wednesday 21st October Bullets and Bandsmen
This talk is the story of a Bandsman, Erskine Williams, on the Western
Front during the First World War. Erskine had been something of a
child prodigy, touring music halls with his father, drawing likenesses
and dressed in a flamboyant costume covered in medals. His daughter,
Daphne Jones, edited her father’s diaries and letters to his father
about his service in the 11th Division’s concert party, which she
shares with us tonight.

Wednesday 18th November Loyalty House—A Civil War Ruin
Inez Gale shares with us the story of Basing House, 12 miles south of
Reading, which was pillaged by Parliamentarians and subsequently
demolished on the orders of Cromwell.

Saturday 12th December Christmas Draw at Museum
Proceeds of which help maintain the Museum. Draw at 11 a.m.

Wednesday 20th January Cricklade’s Charities
A talk about the various Cricklade charities that existed in the past,
some of which still exist today! Tonight’s speaker talks to us about
such charities as the Hundred Acres Charity, the Hungerford’s Charity,
Dunch’s Charity and others.

Wednesday 17th February Annual General Meeting
All are welcome to attend our Annual Meeting, which begins at 7:00
p.m.

Wednesday 17th March Ladies and the Vote
Eve Booy and Paul Booy, jointly deliver this talk, which tells the
difference between Suffragettes and Suffragists and portrays the
violence that accompanied the campaign for Women’s suffrage. We shall
learn something of the life and activities of Miss Edith New.
