hi!being new to this site i thought i would introduce myself, i live
in highworth and have long been interested in the history of ww2
airfields especially the american 8th airforce of which i think i can
claim to be an amatuer authority on the subject! but recently(over the
last few years) iv,e begun to realise theres a wealth of history on my
own doorstep! my mother who was bought up in fairford lived virtually
next door to fairford airfield during ww2 and told me some very
interesting stories apparently my gran used to do the washing for a
lot of the troops at the base at the time! and of the time a glider
crashed across the bottom of the garden, apparently it wasnt the best
garden ornament one could choose but the silk and some of the perspex
came in very useful!! other than that i love animals (five cats two
rotwielers and two ferrets!! an metal detecting which has gained me an
array of rusty nuts an bolts and in some cases even the washers to go
with them!!!! i also play electric guitar (very badly)anyway enough
about me i visited down ampney recently and seen the memorial to jimmy
edwards i could,nt help but think of all the other young men who took
off never to return (tragically) so many untold stories!!!although i
loathe to admit it ive never visited cricklade museum thats going to
change in the very near future once i find out the opening times, and
now i know it exists!!!!
