Die Amerikanerin Allison (Abigail Breslin) absolviert ein Auslandsstudium in  Südfrankreich, als sie in Marseille wegen eines Mordverdachts verhaftet wird. Sie soll ihre Freundin getötet haben. Allisons Vater, der Bohrarbeiter Bill Baker (Matt Damon) aus Stillwater, Oklahoma, reist daraufhin nach Frankreich. Zwar haben Vater und Tochter nur noch wenig Kontakt, doch nun will Bill alles daran setzen, die Unschuld seiner Tochter zu beweisen. Der wortkarge Amerikaner kämpft für Allison, während ihm Sprachbarrieren, kulturelle Unterschiede und ein kompliziertes Justizsystem im Weg stehen.
