It's a great route.  The CC Randonneurs use it regularly as part of the 400 K brevet.

Road is a little busy from Tezcuco plantaion (Where LA-44 joins in) to the Sunshine bridge, otherwise miminal traffic.

There is a levee trail available just before LaPlace, but you need to get off it before you leave LaPlace, as it ends without a way back to the road except cross country, ditch crossing and fence jumping.  (So you want an adventure ride??)

After you cross the Bonnet Carre spillway, the levee trail resumes, and you can take it to at least the Orleans Parish line.  I think the corps of engineers is doing levee raising work to Audubon park where the trail ends.

A few of us are planning to do Baton Rouge to New Orleans on April 11.  Can you offer any suggestions or cautions about the route on River Road?

Correction, Houmas House rather than Tezcuco

The Lower Spillway Road was closed yesterday. It had 10" of water flowing across it and was not passable. The Levee Police told me the river should be cresting on Saturday (4/4) but it may still be under water for the 11th. I crossed on Airline Hwy but it was not much fun - debris on the shoulder and fast cars on your left.
CCR will be having a 400K (Jefferson - Baton Rouge - Jefferson) on the 11th also. We should cross paths with your group.
Good Luck

Bruce,  you are mostly correct but a few parts of your description can be updated.

For the levee trail just before LaPlace, there are two options for getting off this after LaPlace.  When you see the ArcelorMittal steel mill, there is a paved but gravely road from the path to the river road. It's ride-able, just be careful just where you turn onto the road as gravel has accumulated there. Another option is to ride to the end of the paved levee and about 500 more feet on hard pack dirt/gravel. Then you can ride down through grass to a crossing over the ditch onto river road where Vicknair St. also intersects.

Closer to NOLA the levee work is in Jefferson Parish so you can ride on the paved levee until about a mile before the Huey Long Bridge. They are almost finished, so by April 11 that may even be open. You will then ride on river road until you see pavement back up to the levee, just a couple of miles. Once back on the paved levee it is open all the way to Audubon Park.

One more thing, right now there is a little water over the spillway road.  Maybe by 4/11 it will be dry but if not, I recommend you remove your socks and cycle through. It's currently not very deep.

Hope this helps.
