Stopped at the top by a state trooper, who couldn't get the bent into his suv, so he followed me down to the West Bank. I told him bikes are legal on the bridge, but he didn't think so (said it was still in "planning stages"). Glad he let me continue on, as the Algiers ferry was down and I didn't want to backtrack all the way to Chalmette ferry.

Wish they'd make up their minds on the bikes over Huey P. thing.

Looks like we need to either print out and keep a copy of this e-mail with us or at least have it available to show on your cell phone.

Ah ha!  Clarification, and rather quickly!  Now I just have to go after the joker, er, officer, that threatened me with arrest! He doesn't need to be that way.

Erin,

Just wanted to pass on this information to you.  This is what the Troop Bl LSP response was to our e-mail.

All,

Please pass this on to all personnel.

It is not illegal for bicyclist to use the Huey P. Long Bridge.  The bridge is not a “freeway”, “expressway” or closed access roadway.  The bridge has a proper shoulder on it and a bicyclist can safely ride across on the shoulder.  Bicyclist should use the ground level entrances on Jefferson Hwy. and Bridge City Ave. when entering and exiting the bridge.  They should not use the long elevated approaches going over Jefferson Hwy and Bridge City Ave to enter or exit the bridge.  The elevated approaches do not have a safe shoulder suitable for bicyclist.

Bicyclist should not stop on the bridge to sight see or take pictures.  They are required to keep moving across the bridge just the same as vehicular traffic.

I doubt that you will see many bicyclist on the bridge, but I’m sure there will be some from time to time.

Thanks,

Lt. Franklin

OK, I just sent the below email to the state bicycle program coordinator at the LADOT.

I hope this incident will lead to some signage for us.

Thanks.

Hi Brian,

Since your email to me almost 2 years ago, and as far as I've heard, cyclists have been crossing the Huey P. Long bridge without being stopped by state troopers. However, I just got word of someone being stopped yesterday. Eventually the trooper escorted the cyclists over the bridge, but told the cyclists he is not allowed and this allowance for cyclists is just in the planning stages.

Can you send another letter/email to Lt. Franklin at Troop B and ask him to remind all his officers that cycling across the Huey is legal?

Also, what about some signage on the on-ramps saying bikes are permitted?

Occasional sweeping of debris would be nice too, but I realize that's another issue.

Thanks.

Maybe we could get copies of the letter to present to future misguided troopers?

Pat's reply on this topic does have the original letter from Lt. Danny Franklin telling those in his command that bicyclists are permitted over the Huey.  That is what everyone should carry with them when crossing the Huey on their bike.

Ah now I see... Hey wouldn't it be cool if we could get some official looking passes with the governor's seal and all? Would make me feel more confident riding up on that thing.
