Assigning a class to an external link

Hi,
I'm trying to add a small icon next to external links, like dokuwiki
(and many others). I've tried creating a custom dialect and passing a
function for the wiki_links_class_func parameter, but it looks like
the parser only calls my function when the link is internal (ex:
[[MyPage]]).

Am I screwed or there is another option?

There isn't an easy way to do this presently. There is a related issue
that I was planning to work on soon:

If all that's needed is a common class for all external links,
it would be very easy to implement. If I don't get any feedback to the
contrary, I will be adding that support within a day or so.

I've just noticed the issue (should have checked before asking). For
my application, a class for external links would be enough.
