Dear colleagues and community members,

The College of Information and Communications (CIC) is pleased to invite you to a public lecture by Renée DiResta, a leading expert on online manipulation, misinformation, and election integrity, who will be visiting the University of South Carolina to discuss how digital narratives shape public perception and influence democratic processes. Her talk is titled: “From Trends to Truth: How Online Narratives Shape Public Perception."

DiResta is an associate research professor at Georgetown University’s McCourt School of Public Policy, where she conducts research on disinformation, propaganda, and digital influence through the Tech & Public Policy program and the Massive Data Institute. Previously, she served as research director at Stanford University’s Internet Observatory, leading efforts to analyze online platform abuse, including election-related disinformation during the 2020 U.S. presidential election.

Her work has been featured in The Atlantic, Wired, The New York Times, The Washington Post, Foreign Affairs, and POLITICO, and she has advised government agencies, policymakers, and technology companies on strategies for addressing information manipulation. She is also a national security fellow at the Truman National Security Project and the recipient of the 2024 Carl Sagan Prize for her contributions to public understanding of science and technology.
