AnAwesome Wave is the debut album by English indie rock band alt-J, released on 25 May 2012 through Infectious. The album includes the singles "Matilda"/"Fitzpleasure", "Breezeblocks" and "Tessellate". It peaked at number thirteen on the UK Albums Chart, and also charted in Belgium, France, Netherlands and Switzerland. An Awesome Wave won the 2012 British Barclaycard Mercury Prize, and in 2013 was named Album of the Year at the Ivor Novello Awards. The title is a reference to a quote from the 2000 American-Canadian film American Psycho.
The album artwork for An Awesome Wave is a multi-layered radar image of the Ganges river delta in Bangladesh and India.[5] The image in each of the three layers was acquired by the European Space Agency's Envisat Earth-observing satellite, taken separately on 20 January 24 February and 31 March 2009. The overlaid image, titled Ganges' Dazzling Delta,[6] exposes a multitude of colours arising from the variations in background radiation occurring between the three acquisition times.
An Awesome Wave received generally positive reviews from music critics. At Metacritic, which assigns a normalised rating out of 100 to reviews from mainstream critics, the album received an average score of 71, based on 20 reviews, which indicates "generally favorable reviews".[8] Jenny Stevens of NME felt that "the charm of Alt-J's musical scatterbrain is that it works", describing the album as "on the surface... smart alt-pop" while noting that the band "have messed with the formula just enough to make this a brilliantly disquieting debut" and that "in refusing to submit to the rigours of a genre, they might just have made themselves masters of their own."[2] Andy Baber of musicOMH praised the band's ability to mix different musical styles and instruments on the album without coming off as forced or over-complicated.[16] Similarly, BBC Music's Jen Long wrote that An Awesome Wave "spans every workable idea, genre, and influence that can be crammed under the guitar music umbrella, yet it never feels disorientating" and called it an "entirely comprehendible and accessible collection of beautiful pop songs."[17]
Ruth Singleton of Drowned in Sound described An Awesome Wave as "a beautifully rounded, awesome debut album" and said that "whatever Alt-J were aiming for with their debut album, they have managed to prove their value as talented musicians, literary enthusiasts and imagery aficionados."[18] Joe Zadeh of Clash praised the band as "young, yet somehow void of naivety."[19] Jon O'Brien of AllMusic felt that the album was "occasionally guilty of pretentiousness", but that its "eclectic arrays of sound are woven together in a manner so effortlessly that the results never feel forced or contrived."[4] In a more negative assessment, Mojo felt that the band "aim for 'cryptic experimental pop' but hit 'pompous whimsy'" and that "the whole album is uncertain and unconvincing".[20] Laura Snapes of Pitchfork referred to the songs as "draining, elongated MOR tunes".[12]
An Awesome Wave entered the UK Albums Chart at number nineteen on sales of 6,720 copies.[21] After winning the Mercury Prize, the album reached a new peak position of number thirteen, selling 13,527 copies.[22] On 2 August 2013, the album was certified platinum by the British Phonographic Industry (BPI), denoting shipments in excess of 300,000 units in the UK.[23]
On CD, "Hand-Made" is on the same track as "Taro", separated by several minutes of silence. It is not on the vinyl, however is included as a hidden track within "Taro" when downloaded with the included download code.
The last two months had involved us eating our way around Canggu, surfing different breaks, mountain biking around Ubud, and taking on 20 sessions of yoga, so why not add another full day of surfing on our last day? Luckily, a friend introduced us to Buddy, a local guy from Medewi who had just set up Bali-SurfGuide.com. So we joined him for a day and headed to his hometown in Medewi to experience the longest left hand wave in Bali.
Medewi is situated on the west part of Bali about a 3 hour drive from Denpasar (or 2 hours from Canggu where we were). Medewi beach is a beautiful rocky black sand beach and is home to the longest left hand wave in Bali. Because of this, the Medewi Point Break spot is becoming more and more popular. The waves break over a stone bottom and are great to play around on if you want to improve your skills.
As soon as we paddled out early in the morning, I knew it was going to be a great day of surfing. It was relatively busy in the morning as most people were heading in for their daily surf sessions when the tides were high. The tide moves in quick so be sure to surf coming up to high tide or during. Within 10 minutes, I had caught two nice waves and nailed my bottom turns but was having trouble turning back on my heels. As I mentioned, I am not as good as I would like to be.
Buddy however, straight away starting explaining what he noticed me doing wrong and how I could improve. He told me to keep my front foot at an angle and to relax and turn my head to where I want to go. He also reminded me to slowly twist my shoulders after my head and my body/board would follow. Boom- just like that. Mistakes I had kept making the last month had been noted and finally, I was aware of them.
The day was awesome. Anna had a bit of trouble when we first went out due to the swell being big and the current strong. She ended up scratching her legs on the reef but Buddy helped, made sure she was ok and we continued the rest of the day. Both of us would recommend surfing in Medewi and with Buddy. There are a few other breaks in Medewi so if you get time, go check them out and let us know what they are like. We will be going back! Despite growing in popularity everyone says Medewi still holds the same charm it did 20 years ago.
I love it so much that I not only wrote this unpaid completely honest Embr Wave review for you in 2020 when I received it as a gift, but when Embr Labs came out with the Embr Wave 2 I got one of those as well! This updated Embr Wave review will focus on the currently-sold Embr Wave 2 that I have owned for over a year but I will also share how it is better than the original, and how I have used the Embr Wave for nearly three years.
I have traveled with the Embr Wave, it has been worn by my husband and my daughter. I find the Embr Wave such great quality we still use our original Embr Wave as well as the upgraded Embr Wave 2. This review focuses on my experience with the Embr Wave and how it helps with perimenopause symptoms like hot flashes (the reason my husband gifted me an Embr Wave in the first place).
The Embr Wave warms or cools your skin, triggering your nerves to send a signal to your brain. Your brain naturally processes the thermal sensation. In a matter of seconds, your body balances itself and you feel a difference.
Please note the Embr Wave does not change your body temperature. You want your body to be around 98.7 degrees Fahrenheit to be healthy. What the Embr Wave does is change your perception of temperature.
The box also includes a quickstart guide and a round disc the color of your watch that is about the size of a silver dollar. This disc is where you place your Embr Wave bracelet to charge. In a compartment in the box, you will find a 3-foot USB-C cord that will connect your charging disc to a USB port. If you desire a longer cord, it's easy to swap out the provided cord with another from Amazon.
The Embr Wave is round about the size and thickness of a smartwatch or fitness tracker. There is a metal mesh strap connected to one side of the Wave, and the other side is a slot that you slip the strap through. The strap keeps itself closed with a magnet.
The Embr Wave has two buttons on the side; a dotted/textured one and a solid one. Tap the solid button to have it warm up, and the dotted button to cool off. However, the best way to appreciate the Embr Wave is to download the app and use that to manage the device.
When I first got the Embr Wave, I just used the button, and that light is SO BRIGHT. I was like, how does one sleep wearing this thing? But then, when I used the app, I realized how well I could customize this experience. I can have it bright, dim, discreet, or even with no light showing, and with the app I can switch between these lighting features at any time.
This will not make you feel cozy in a bikini in the snow or comfortable in a turtleneck sweater at the beach. The Embr Wave only changes the way you feel by a couple of degrees. Just that bit that makes things more comfortable.
I wiggled all the tree parts together to find the prelit feature and decided to stop working. I went back in the attic to look for lights, lots of crawling under the tree to test these lights in the extension cord all while wearing a full face of makeup, flannel from neck to toe, and a faux fur hat matting my curls to my brow.
Another occasion made it great that I now own more than one Embr Wave. We rented a house at the beach, and there was no A/C and the bedroom ceiling fan stopped working. Even with the windows open, the air was stifling, thick, and hot. My husband and I each donned an Embr Wave and within minutes the experience was far more comfortable and we slept soundly. Without the Embr Wave bracelets, I know we would have been angrily tossing and turning all night.
During a hot flash, your brain acts upon a false signal that it needs to expel excess heat from your body. Research shows that immediate stimulation with cool sensations (like an ice cube or Embr) before or during a hot flash can reduce its overall intensity and/or duration. It can also reduce hot flash stress.
