Periodically, I find important windows disappear and simply never come back.

Right now the Scene Browser - the one that also shows properties if you double click on a scene object, has dissappeared and theres no way to get it back. THeres no option under the menu to have it reappear, only another 'Scene browser" That doesn't have the properties visible when I double click scene items.

Why is this and how do I fix it? The random missing window problem tends to ruin my custom layouts also.

Create your own custom layout with all necessary windows. Then uncheck checkbox "Auto-update Layout" in Layout menu from the upper bar. And in case when some thing goes wrong with windows - you can just switch to your layout again. And everything will be on it's places.

It also has Dopesheet, Fcurves, Story and animation trigger. But if I start up the app and my layouts gone, adding a navigator doesnt allow any of these extra tabs within the same window.

Thanks for the tip on auto update layout I'll try that.

And so nothing I do right now, in my 3 screen custom layout, allows the Story window to appear. I can create a navigator window, but theres no Tabs.

WTF Autodesk? You guys are seriously average.

Maybe you can take a look at the layout definition file to check if your window is not off screen or was accidentally closed. You can find the file in your profile settings. If you are on windows it should be something lie that :C:\Users\...\Documents\MB\2015-x64\config\Layouts.

I'm using a dual-monitor setup at work, and every time I try to create/update a custom layout with Motion Builder's default windows (FCurves, Animation Layers, Properties, etc.), none of the windows display correctly upon reloading the layout. Although the windows retain the correct X,Y position on screen, their widths and heights are shrunk down the smallest possible size that the windows can scale to.

I've looked into the custom layout .txt files (located in C:\Users\**\Documents\MB\2020-x64\config\Layouts), and it seems that MotionBuilder is saving the correct X, Y, width, and height values for the windows ... it's just that whenever the layout is selected, these values are not being processed correctly.

I've experienced similar layout bugs throughout the past three versions of MotionBuilder (2018, 2019, and now 2020). In 2018 and 2019, any windows I manually placed for a custom update would simply not display on screen after reloading the layout. It didn't seem to matter whether the windows were free-floating or docked inside the program.

The last version that custom layouts functioned as expected for me was 2017.

A buddy of mine found a very strange work around that almost fully resolves this issue. NOTE: This will not solve the issue where a portion of Motion Builder opens up behind the Windows Start Bar at the bottom of the main monitor.

Step 2) Open just one instance of Motion Builder and set up your custom layout the way that you prefer, making sure to leave one monitor without any of the layout on it. To create a new layout, go to "Layout > Create Custom..." To update an already saved layout, go to "Layout > Update Current Layout" or have "Auto-update Layout" checked.

Optional Step Part 1) Set up the main Motion Builder window that is on your main monitor so that it's floating in the center of the main monitor instead of maximized to full-screen. Doing this will help create a separate work around for the other issue that I first mentioned at the beginning of this post.

Optional Step Part 2) Now maximize your Motion Builder window that is on your main monitor. It should no longer be behind the Windows Start bar at the bottom. It's annoying but it helps a little.

This all sounds very strange but it does fix most of the custom layout issues. That said, Autodesk needs to resolve this!! It's ridiculous that it has been this way for as long as it has.
