I am too even though I don't have the connectivity for it ~ remote
rural area with infrastructure to match ~ but can imagine doing more
with it than some of the other synchronous environments. Then again,
maybe I've just read too much William Gibson

What I have discovered, for many individuals, is the reluctance to spend the time in accessing and maneuvering in the virtual world.  It does have an interesting, somewhat mind expanding, effect for many ... the time needed to become comfortable with it seems to be the main drawback.

Some of us keep trying, yet I think that some of the hyper and negative commentary may have out a damper on the sustained use.  My employ college has offered several courses within the SL venue with mixed success. Chris Crissman, of a uni in N Carolina, and a SL and MOOC veteran, offers her higher ed English courses in BookHenge in SL, and is quite successful.  I think Chris is successful in any venue.

The techie folks love creating the sims and accessories for avatars.  The users, not so much and their interest wanes.  I sometimes think that the "classroom" setting drives some off-grid (we have mostly returning adults who do online for what they consider the convenience, and, perhaps, the anonymity).  And some folks are just plain afraid of puppets and dolls!  There goes the avatar concept :-)

My reasons are rather less complex. SL is not accessible on dial-up. I
registered, have a name (which I don't remember), checked out avatars
(did not like any of the free ones) but cannot enter.

The obsession with being someone who bears no resemblance to their
selves IRL ~ a fantasy resemblance ~ is not one I share. When/ if
connectivity improves, I will definitely give it a fair try it first
hand

I appreciate SL's possibilities for learning but recognize limitations
(not quite the same as being hyper negative) and would have used it in
the local after school program had it not been blocked by admin and
regarded with total abhorrence by teachers, administration, school
board and parents.  I also proposed a course to get all those high
school gamers writing by having them write game scripts. What the
program offered me instead bored me as much as it did the students.
I've read about BookHenge and Chris' blog posts. Probably lucky not to
get stern warnings out of it... but did not get invited to submit
courses the next session.
