Hi,

just heard the 12 MB Chaos Soundfont and it sounds superb! Do you know
a soundfont that sounds better than the 12 MB Chaos soundfont? I'm
looking for the "best" soundfont for my SB Live Platinum 5.1...

Thanks,
Andre.

Andre,

There are a lot of SoundFonts that sound better, but also take up more RAM.
Many people will argue that Fluid sounds the best, but it also takes up 100+
megs of memory compared to Chaos's 12.

GeneralUser GS 1.2 is very compatible with GM and GS MIDI files, and I think
it sounds good considering it is only 25 megabytes in size. If you want to
download it or hear some samples, visit:

http://www.sccmusic.250x.com/sfont/genuser/index.htm.

You can find more GM/GS SoundFonts at HammerSound or HYBRID (UK). Be
careful if you use SoundFonts larger than 32 MB in size, since the Live!
hardware can only address 32 MB of sample RAM at once. The links are here:

Hammersound: http://www.hammersound.net/
HYBRID: http://members.tripod.co.uk/hybridsf/

Hope this gives you a good start :)

I agree GeneralUser has a good sound. Another is Cadenza -- I think it is
still available from Hammersound (www.hammersound.com). Fluid is excellent,
but you need 256k or more RAM to use it easily (if you have less RAM there
are utilities to help you make use of it, more or less).

Do the soundfonts mentioned contain 808 and 909 drumsets, too? I need
these drumsets to make kind of dance, house and techno-music...

Andre,

GeneralUser GS contains all the normal GS drumsets, including TR-808 and
TR-909 samples. The following audio sample uses the "Dance" drumset:

http://www.sccmusic.250x.com/sfont/genuser/litt-gu.mp3

GeneralUser GS also includes "Electronic" and "TR-808/TR-909" drumsets for
dance/electronic music.

It sure says something about how to fill the memory with useless samples....

Hi!

I've got the problem of having only 40 MB RAM, so I can use an amount
of only 19.5 MB. Or is there a trick availible to use more RAM for
soundfonts?

I can use that soundfont in two month, then I'm buying a new PC :-).
Are 256 MB RAM enough or do I have to buy 512 MB?

I opened the Fluid-soundfont with Vienna and noticed, there is no 909
drumset availible...

I've downloaded the soundfont but it has got 25.5 MB and I can only
choose 19.5 MB of maximum soundfont RAM :-(.

> You can find more GM/GS SoundFonts at HammerSound or HYBRID (UK).

Yes, but that's the problem: there are too many soundfonts availible,
so testing all the soundfonts is impossible. That's why I'm asking
what the "best" soundfonts are.

Thanks.

If you are mainly interested in dance fonts, why not combine your own?
909 sets are widely available. What you can also do is create your own 909
set with free samples you can find on the net. (Remember the original 909
can be tweaked to give the kit you want)
A suggestion: Use Rebirth to create your own 909 or 808 set. I know, it's
not the real thing, but who will hear???
For GM purpose Fluid is my favourite, HOWEVER it is so big that in practice
the use is limited, especially because I'm running the APSLive drivers.

I use the 8meg Synergi font for creating the basic midi's. Then I replace
the instruments with the ones I like from several other fonts and make the
Soundfont fit especially for that song.

So, for example, I use the guitars from Fluid, with Cadenza strings and the
Melotti drumkit.
The Live! card is (almost???) a sampler, so I recommend you use it as such.

Yes, the live card can be a sampler instead of a card that uses sound fonts.
That opens a lot of new sound posibilitys for users.

To use the card as a sampler. go to the soundfonts menu,
Click configure instrument
Then at the select instrument menu, pick instrument you want to replace.
Then click to highlight it in instrument stack menu.
Then click load
Click on file of type input box, and change it to .wav file type.
Now load a sample that has been recorded as a wav file.
