No sound problem discovered, but the subject test never succeeds. Windows XP
Direct X Diagnostic application shows on main page "Error: problem getting
extra sound info". On the music tab, "Total recorder virtual device
failure". What does this mean, and is it, should it be, fixable? TIA for
suggestions.

A quick Google search turned up this site:

http://www.totalrecorder.com/

Do you have their software installed?

I find now that I do have it, and had forgotten about the software. Had been
searching for a way to capture a piece of music , from a dvd I bought
recently, to hard disk. The on-board sound system was deficient in
subprograms, capabilities. Thus audacity (a recorder) would not grab it.
So I installed Audigy, and that makes it all easy.
I'll remove the T.R. program and that will probably make the "fail" report
go away. Many thanks for your help.
