I swapped the cards and the snap! stopped. I think the Audigy 2 ZS was
not seated properly in the PCI slot, because I had to fiddle with the
Audigy 2 seating before my PC would recognise it. I may go back to the 2 ZS.
However, after a day listening to the Audigy 2, I have convinced myself
that it sounds better! Might this be because the Audigy 2 came with
different settings? Are the settings stored on the card, or in the
software? It is possible that my volume is just a touch louder than
before (I had to turn my active speakers off while I was fiddling with
the connections, and I may not have put its volume control back in the
same place) and this naturally makes the treble and bass sound better.
In the process, I downloaded, but didn't install the newest driver. If
I'm happy with the sound, is there any advantage in my upgrading the
driver?
I ran the diagnostics (from the Creative system tray volume control and
my new (i.e. the older Audigy 2) card failed the Midi test. I've never
used Midi. I don't have the Joystick/Midi cable anyway (don't have room
for it even if I did have it) so presumably my Audigy 2 ZS would also
have failed this test?
