E-MU 1820 - Included Cubase VST 5.1 won't run

Any suggestions? I got Cubase VST 5.1 free with an E-MU 1820 audio
interface. I have installed the Cubase software only (not the audio
interface) on my laptop with Windows XP Professional Version 2002, Service
Pack 2, Intel Pentium M processor 1.60 GHz, 512 MB of RAM.
When I launch the program, it just flashes a Cubase screen that immediately
disappears. The program just won't run. It doesn't require a hardware key -
the audio interface just came with an install CD. I've already tried
uninstalling and reinstalling. What am I doing wrong? Thanks in advance for
any help you can provide!
