Hey beautiful people!

It's Spring 2012, and this weekend marks a full Supermoon, which means I feel plain crazy. It's a time of serious change, and the full moon is traditionally a time to let go of what is no longer needed to make space for the new. Scary. But I believe in you.

Here are some yummy articles and video poems to sink your teeth into. I'm also doing a Teaching as Storytelling workshop in August, and a Creative Flow workshop in July. See below for details.

Articles and Poems

Happy (Belated) Earth Day! I got you some trash. Me and Slajov Zizek hang out for a while:
I think what we should do to confront properly the threat of ecological catastrophe is not all this New Age stuff to break out of this ecological manipulative mold and to found our roots in nature but on the contrary--to cut off even more our roots in nature. [...] To become even more artificial.

I also got to see my first print article in Spirituality and Health's Spring/Summer magazine entitled Empowerment Through Fear: The Wild Things in your BathtubIt is really nice to hold a thing in your hand and read it. S&H is a really thoughtful, beautiful publication. Luckily, you can also read it online: http://www.spiritualityhealth.com/articles/empowerment-through-fear-wild-things-your-bathtub

And I am developing a serious crush on spiritual badass Rabbi Rami Shapiro from S&H. You should take a look at his blog online: http://www.spiritualityhealth.com/blogs/rabbi-rami-shapiro

I had the distinct pleasure of guest blogging for YJ's excellent online magazine. This piece, Protecting an Open Heart, is about how to protect a vulnerable heart when yoga starts to crack you open. Yup, it's a real problem:
There’s no manual on how to make a graceful transition from numbness to walking about with a wide-open heart. While our teachers encourage us to become more vulnerable, they don’t usually tell us how it will affect us or how much it can hurt.

This is a video of me doing a poem as WOWPS rep for the Vancouver Poetry Slam a couple of years ago: For When You Are So Deep In Love You Don't Know How To Get Out. Revising it for this year's Van Slam finals kinda broke my heart all over again.
We hide our silences in sentences,
between our teeth and under our tongues.
What are you thinking about?
I can't give you these open palms forever:
they are your home, your bed, a couch to sleep on in an unfrendly town.
But they ask for alms as well: love, words kisses....
please don't leave me.

And I just posted this one on my complicated relationship with Kali, goddess of divine annihilation, performed at Van Slam Semi-Finals: Meditation on World-Destroying (You Know You Want To):
When I was younger, I wanted to rage against the machine. I wanted to fight for gender equality, I wanted to save the trees, and I wanted to filet my best friend’s boyfriend like the manipulative, cheating carp that he was.

Speaking of which, I am now Vancouver Poetry Slam Team's alternate! Which means I'll be travelling to the US and Canada learning about poetry, meeting people, and performing where I'm needed. Look for me in Charlotte, and Saskatoon in the coming months! My amazing teammates are Erich Haygun, Erin Kirsh, Zaccheus Jackson, and Jillian Christmas.

Yoga

With the spring changes, my teaching schedule is changing a little. Change is good! I'll be at East Side Yoga and Semperviva a little more, along with Highgate YYOGA as always, and South Granville until it transitions to a training centre. You can see my updated schedule as it changes at http://www.jcpeters.ca/yoga-teaching-schedule/

Creative Flow:
Yup, of course, I'm planning another Creative Flow workshop at Highgate on Saturday, July 14th.
We will move through a Flow practice and a Yin practice to change our brainwaves and open creative centres in the body. We will experiment with freewriting and more directed writing excercises to learn how yoga can spark your personal creativity. Sharing welcome but never required!
At Highgate YYOGA: keep your eye on the website as it comes up.

Teaching as Storytelling 25 Hour Vinyasa Teacher Training this upcoming August!

“Just wanted to say thanks so much for your amazing training this week!
The feedback from every class I’ve taught since has been “wow, I really liked your sequencing”!”
~SS

I'm really excited to teach how to craft your sequences and classes based on the classic concept of storytelling. You'll also learn about Asana Math: how to sequence logically, but also creatively, and skills of languaging that turn you into a very effective teacher and storyteller, all a the same time. Plus you can do it in modules, and with a payment plan. You have no excuse.

August 19th-22nd
Sunday 2-6pm
Monday to Wednesday 8am-5pm (with a 2 hour break)
$515+HST for the full training
make a deposit or learn more here:

That is a lot of information, isn't it! I hope you get some juice out of these tomatoes.

Write me anytime with questions or thoughts, and follow me at

Love, peace, and unicorns!

Thanks Julie !
I feel exactly the same and just realized today that SuperMoon is coming ! and it is on 5th of May (the biggest and the closest) - is it kosher to do Moon Salutations in the morning at your Hatha class ? or does it need to be done in the evening ?
Did you know that every Moon has its name - depends on the month - this month (May) it is a Milk Moon - sweet ha ? Your birth month it is Fruit Moon and mine Snow Moon ! I love that !
See you soon........ and yaaa ....letting go and changes are good !
Love

Awesome, thank you Hanna!

Yes to moon Salutations on Sunday, that's a great idea! Remind me in case I forget, but I probably won't!

See you then! :)

Hi Julie,

Thanks for your updates - I love getting them. I've been going through a lot lately, mostly icky health things which are always coming and going, and I miss your Tuesday class. I hope to be back in a couple of weeks - was going to try this week but had to schedule something that evening.

-Vanessa :)
