Has anyone heard when T-Mobile is going to release the June 2024 update for Pixel devices? There is a gap in security and it seems that T-Mobile is delaying the release on this important update. Google released the update over a week ago, and I am not going to side-load the update. So I'm wondering if anyone else has heard anything?
I'm also waiting. I've heard the security update is for a serious day one exploit. Also, I've been eagerly waiting for the added functionality of Displayport video output on my pixel 8 delivered in this update.
I spoke to them last Friday and they claim they are not responsible for the delay. This isn't the first time security updates have been delayed. This is just as annoying as the fact that they only carry 128gb Google phones. But that's for another thread. SMH
I spoke to T-Mobile twice this week about the delay. Both times the rep told me the update should be by the end of the month. Neither rep was really confident in what they were saying though so I'm really disappointed in T-Mobile and the lack of communication to their customers.
It looks like it's finally available without any special procedure, though I still had to manually make it check for the update. ? I don't believe the claim they're not responsible for the delay. Being charitable, I could see them not being directly responsible, but it is due to the contractor/subcontractor they might have hired to develop the carrier-specific patches that need incorporated into the update package. Which is still technically their fault, but it allows them to "play the PR game," by saying they aren't the responsible party. However, I wonder if they used to have an engineering team in-house that used to do these and to cut costs they outsourced it. Nothing would surprise me these days from Magenta's Business Leadership.
You can believe whatever you wish but manufacturers gave up on carriers being competent enough to not mess up their devices over a decade ago. Some carriers get their updates before others. This is usually because there is a modem or carrier aggregation change included in the update. T-Mobile's network, which Google Fi uses, is a lot more complicated than AT&T's as an example. Especially after the Sprint merger.
The design factor remains the same as that of the Pixel 8 and 8 Pro but in a more compact size. The Pixel 8a fits the hand perfectly and is easy to use. The phone is light and has a plastic build, which is unexpected for a phone in this price segment. We have usually seen mid-range phones offering a glass body.
While the Pixel 8a is IP67 certified, offering respectable protection from dust and water, utilising an IP68 rating would have been nice as per its price range. Google could have also considered enhancing the durability by opting for a higher-generation Corning Gorilla Glass, as it currently uses Gorilla Glass 3 for display protection.

The display gets reasonably bright, with a claimed peak brightness of up to 2,000 nits, though real-world performance may vary. The Always-on display functionality is a handy addition, providing at-a-glance information without needing to wake the screen fully.
