I like Amazon. They have always been reliable and had the best
prices. I often buy used books from their site as well. I try to go
with vendors who have a 98% or higher rating.
As far as which books you might like, it kind of depends on where you
are in your interests. If you are completely new to nutritional
concepts, it might be useful for you to start with "If It's not Food,
Don't Eat it". The books "Essential Eating" and "The Summers
Approach" give you much more specific information about how to
construct your eating plan. Essential Eating has a lot of lovely
photos as well. Shelley Summers is the author of this eating style.
Probably the first thing that you can do that would help not just
weight but general health is to pay attention to how you are combining
your food. This is hard at first, especially if you're a serious
sandwich and/or pasta eater, but with a little creativity, you will do
fine. The idea is to avoid eating proteins (eggs, cheese, meat,
yoghurt) with carbohydrates (bread, pasta, rice, etc.). These two
food groups are digested in such a way in the body that when you eat
them at the same time, one of them (either the protein or the carb)
doesn't digest completely. This can cause a strain on your digestion
resulting in digestive disturbances (gas/bloating/acid) and subsequent
health and/or weight issues. Something to note is that for the
purpose of food combining, potatoes and corn fall into the category of
vegies! And you can combine vegies with everything!
Sprouted grains digest in the body like vegetables, so when you are
using sprouted grains (or quinoa), you can combine them with proteins
successfully. In the links you will see a listing for Berlin Bakery
where I like to get my bread. You can also use Ezekial (sp) brand
which has a coarser texture but is available at most health food
groceries. If you like to bake, you can use the sprouted spelt flour
available from Summers Sprouted Flour Company (see Links). She also
has sprouted cereals as well as other grains. You'll learn much more
about these ideas from the books mentioned above.
"If It's Not Food.." mentions food combining, but doesn't really give
you any information about alternatives. That is available in the
other two books. Or ask the group and I'm sure someone will have more
ideas and information. But I suggest you do the reading because then
you will be better able to understand the responses you get.
I hope this helps.
