Hi all! Finally a round up of what happened at the first CB meeting!
After attending the excellent Glug event organized by Agency Crush -
http://www.meetup.com/glugbrighton/ - on the previous Friday night I
was slightly concerned that people would be unlikely to show up on a
windy Monday evening for an evening that promised no free booze or
djs. This concern was soon put to rest when I got to the Victory and
found that I wasn't even the first one there. A handful of us took
seats upstairs and started the introductions with more new faces
appearing in quick succession.
Everyone was chatting happily away and it was apparent that there was
a good variety of disciplines represented including: Print, packaging
and web design, illustration, web development, prop design and iPhone
app design
It was very gratifying to see that, as this group has shown, there's a
need for this kind of gathered community and, acting on an idea
suggested by my gf, I handed out a bunch of post-its for people to
write down what they'd like to get out of whatever Create Brighton
becomes. What was written down and then stuck to the walls is as
follows:
"Looking for another retail packaging designer.. or textile designer.
A print artworker too?"
"Network of people to:
- Bounce ideas off
- Pass work to/from
- Share cool websites, promotions etc.
- Get feedback on work
- Get pissed with"
"Meet people who need help with accounts and tax and want to save
money!"
"I'm starting out in Freelance work, so I'm looking for any useful
tips and advice on how to make it!"
"Someone to talk to about work who isn't my wife"
"I have come to meet people who need to employ a freelance graphic
designer and to get advice on how to be successful as a graphic
designer"
"Erm... Perhaps a group to share / begin projects - maybe exhibit!?"
"Meet & talk to a designer in person. Learn new stuff (maybe adding
presentations to meetings). Communicate online"
"I have no idea"
"I'm not sure what I'm looking for from this group. Just to say hello
to some fellows really. Sorry, I know that not very useful"
So, a bunch of different reason for people showing up which was
encouraging I thought. The general consensus was that getting together
was a really good idea and that we should make plans for another one
and have them at regular intervals - Would you be interested in
another meet up before Christmas? Perhaps I should send another
message about that...
I proposed that something that would be useful to me would be a
private forum where we could discuss work or whatever without fear of
client oversight and that seemed to be received well. I also suggested
that a publicly accessible showcase website along the lines of
http://www.notcot.org would be great to show off the broad variety of
creativity happening in and around Brighton and that provoked an
interesting conversation that seemed to be full of interesting
potential if the idea can be formalised and a plan made. Tim Jameson
from Twill -
www.twillmedia.co.uk - highlighted a need to consider the
idea from a client-looking-for-a-resource perspective and Tom Hamilton
from Sussex University's Centre of Excellence - www,
inqbate.co.uk -
seemed to think that the idea had legs as well as being potentially
interesting to some of Brighton's most prominent agencies and the
Council. Exciting stuff indeed.
Plenty more was discussed and it would be great if others who attended
could add their thoughts about what happened.
To all those who couldn't make it you were missed and it will be great
to welcome you along next time we get together. This could definitely
be the start of something interesting.
