hello,

i'm making a site for a client who wants to update various text-only
pages.
i thought a smart way of doing this might be to iframe some blogger
sites he can update within the main static design, but i don't want
all the blogger logos etc. ideally i want a blog-type site that has
the most basic of appearances so it doesn't necessarily look like a
blog nestled within an html page. does one exist? or is there a
simpler way of doing this?

apes, ivories and peacocks to the person who solves this...

many thanks,

nick

Hi

I'd try something like http://www.cushycms.com/ - it's about the
simplest CMS imaginable, and if you just want to make small edits to
static pages it works very well. It won't let your client add new
pages, and I'm a bit dubious about having to pass on your FTP details
to a third party, but other than that it's a good solution. In the
long run it's really worth investing some time in learning a proper
CMS. Everyone's got their favourites (I use Wordpress, Textpattern and
ExpressionEngine) but learning one of the big ones means you can take
on bigger, more interesting sites.

Just a thought though: should we not try to keep CreateBrighton more
about socialising/networking/sharing ideas? There are already loads of
forums for asking technical questions, it'd be good (I think) to
concentrate on the other stuff... Any thoughts?

I'd agree with the cushycms idea, I'd also agree with trying to make
CreateBrighton more about design/creative type questions?..

however, to answer the original question in a different way, you might want
to have a look at tumblr.com they have an 'Embed Your Tumblelog' bit of
javascript which might simplify things for you >

cushycms.com or simplecms.com seem to be the way to go though.

Hey Frank,

I reckon that Create Brighton should be a place where folk who want to
can get advice about anything really - not everyone is a member of
other problem solving communities so it makes sense that those
questions get answered here, even if the solution can be linked to
elsewhere.

Hi

I agree with Adam...as a member of flashbrighton group, I found out
that one of the great advantages of such a group, is that when someone
has a flash related(or not!) question and shares it with the group,
one can learn about new things, expand his/her knowledge , and suggest
sollutions which one has not thought about.

Technical forums are good, but can be a bit impersonal, take ages to
get a reply somethimes, while on this case, it's like 80% of the times
somebody has come up with the same problem/question you might have.
And if you still feel you need to know more, you can still talk about
it over a pint or in a group meeting (or even somebody from the group
can have a presentation about it!)

Still, socialising is a bug part of a group and I definetely would
like to meet new people...SO...when ARE WE MEETING?:)

thanks,
Charis

I'd like to add that this group is just finding its way at the moment,
hence my enthusiasm to encourage people to do whatever they like.

I'm hoping that we can all get together soon to talk about what we'd
like to get out of the site...

Yes fair enough. Hopefully we can grow to include a forum to cover all
this stuff!

Yep, I reckon we should aim for a private forum that will allow us to
discuss work and let off steam when necessary without fear of client
oversight as well as a public site that showcases all the amazing work
that is no doubt happening everyday across the region!

Hope no-one minds, but I've set up a forum for us at http://excoboard.com/exco/index.php?boardid=25236

Enjoy the forum-y goodness!

Hey Amit,

I reckon it would make more sense to assemble the forum under the
CreateBrighton.com url when we've had a chance to work out what's
going to happen, it would just be a lot easier to find.

Cheers,

Adam

Thanks Amit!

Do we really need though an external site for a forum?...I was
thinking we could actually use GoogleGroup, much cleaner, no big
advert blocks, and no extra URLs to remember and to login
separately...

>>without fear of client oversight...well no clients allowed then!

Why not keep it all in one space, and if we need a showcase site
create a wordpress blog?

I do get a bit moody when I see these 80s design-grey looking forums:)

...maybe is just me!

It's a shame the styling isn't as nice as excoboard.com though.

Hi Charis,

I'm thinking that this Google Group will serve as the basis of
something bigger but that we can use it to work out what that bigger
thing is.

I think that Create Brighton could serve a couple of purposes:

1. As a place for us all to get together online to ask questions, give/
get advice or relax when work is getting tough - this should be behind
a login to allow people to speak freely I think. Also a benefit of
using forum software is the categorisation that would allow those who
want advice to seek it in the appropriate space while general chit
chat can be kept separate.
2. Somewhere to organise get togethers
3. Some cross promotion of other related activities in Brighton - the
£5 app for example - http://fivepoundapp.com/ - is really interesting
for those of an entrepreneurial leaning
4. A showcase of work that really promotes what Brighton can achieve -
something like http://notcot.org perhaps

What do you think?
