I'd suggested setting up somewhere for us to share blog / podcast /
book recommendations. Would be great to do that, but here are a few
for now (apologies if some of these are a bit obvious!) :
Blogs:
http://www.alistapart.com - great general web design articles.
http://boxesandarrows.com - a lot of good interaction and IA stuff
here. Good podcast also.
http://www.smashingmagazine.com - maybe a bit gimmickier (lots of "top
10...") but usually something interesting to read here.
Podcasts:
Boagworld - not convinced that Paul Boag is the best designer in the
world, but this podcast is fun and useful for pointing you to new
articles on the web.
D&AD President's Lectures - some amazing talks here. Check out Matt
Pyke's one - some really beautiful stuff.
Freelance Radio - another vote for this one!
TEDTalks - very clever MIT types showcasing new tech/science stuff.
This Week in Tech - good for keeping up with general tech news.
Books:
Graphic Design: A User's Manual, Adrian Shaughnessy - Am reading this
at the moment and it's brilliant. It's an A-Z of thoughts on all
aspects of being a designer and it's beautifully written. And 99% of
it applies to web design too.
Grid Systems in Graphic Design, Joseph Muller-Brockmann - I'd been
using grids for web design for a while but this really opened my eyes
to the near infinite possibilities. Learnt a lot about typography too.
Unspecial Effects for Graphic Designers, Bob Gill - Very witty (in a
good way) design. I love Bob Gill.
A few more obvious ones: The Art of Looking Sideways, DOM Scripting,
CSS Mastery, Don't Make Me Think...
Curious to know what you all listen to/read?
