Really interesting discussion from Class Room in the Coop - KazJaps explains why the test pairing to a silver Welsumer probably provided in conclusive results - AND, some of the complexities that you would need to do a true (scientific) test pairing.

With the genetic knowledge that we have gained over the years.... the original 'test pairing' when folks said that the UK cockerels looked silver  -- was done here by Jilly-potter

and the questions about the inconclusive nature of that particular pairing are raised in these posts (possibly among others) in the thread:

a breeder from another forum made a cross between Silver looking CCL rooster to a Silver Duckwing welsummer to test to see if his male was silver or gold(with ig/ig)

Sire Male.

F1. +/- Pullet

S/s+ males

You are making alot of assumptions. For one, I would never assume that a Cream Legbar line has ig/ig, or just ig/ig alone, without segregating out all mutations. From memory, there were at least two sources where Punnett et al. extracted a ig-like mutation (one with the Araucana x Hamburg etc crosses, & later from a Leghorn line).

And that 'chestnut permissible' in the British Poultry Standards probably has something to do with Punnett et al. segregating similar in their research. So you can't even say that there weren't phaeomelanin intensifiers segregating too in the original Cream Legbars.

-----------------------
Plus the following in the Crele Modern Game line I have:

Full sisters:

Left b+/-, Right B/-

Their B/b+ father:

Ie, the e+ B/- Crele hens are a lighter colour than the het. B/b+ males (no B - dose effect differences), & these have a red enhancer in the line.

So I don't even have to have ig/ig to produce the Cream Legbar female phenotype wink

It was a shame with that cross that they used a Silver Duckwing hen & not wild-type. The silver hen could have phaeomelanin diluter(s) masked by S. So we don't even know if the rooster has ig, &/or a dominant phaeomelanin diluter.
