Humanitarian assistance

As part of our international work we are exploring ways in which the higher education (HE) sector can work with and support the humanitarian sector.

Enhancing Learning and Research for Humanitarian Assistance (ELRHA)

We and the other HE funding bodies in the UK are funding the ELRHA project, which was launched in January 2009 and will run for two years. This project - the first of its kind - is a collaborative network hosted by Save the Children that will support partnerships between UK HE and humanitarian agencies.

The project aims to create a bridge between the significant resources of the HE sector and the needs of the humanitarian sector. To this end it will:

  • stimulate research and learning in the humanitarian sector
  • build a robust and effective framework for partnership that will meet the needs of the future.

Call for collaborative proposals

ELRHA has announced a call for collaborative proposals from humanitarian agencies and UK higher education institutions. It will make a number of small grants in July 2009. The deadline for the submission of proposals is 1700 Friday 26 June 2009.

Background

ELRHA developed from the HEFCE-funded UK HE Disaster Relief Project.

The project highlighted the need for an interface between the humanitarian sector and UK HE. It also highlighted a growing interest within the humanitarian sector in the development of a professional competency framework. The four UK funding councils recognised these findings and funded the ELRHA project in response.
