I hope this isn't considered off-topic....

I've discovered a couple of useful tools, to be used with a RTL dongle or similar, that might give some rudimentary insights into the integrity of the generated DAB waveform.
Has anyone had any luck installing them on windows and getting them working?
  • When I download sdr-j I unzip the file into a folder and run the DAB receiver software OK.  But when I select the dongle input it crashes and when I select dabstick it says "no luck" and in the dos window says "rtlsdr_demo_read_reg failed with -2".
  • When I try DAB Player it says "make sure DAB stick with Realtek chipset is connected".
I think I have the drivers installed OK because SDR# works fine with the dongle (its a Terratec TStick+)

Any ideas?

Thanks, Glyn

Seems pretty 'on topic' IMHO.

NP. Both are very handy tools!

What is this Windows of which you speak? ;-) Um, ok. I admit to having a £79 Windoze tablet from Agros which I use for DAB Player. Works well but pressing the buttons on the touchscreen isn't fun.

You'll have fun getting the drivers to co-exist. You might have luck if you use a different stick (with a different USB hardware id) for DAB player (and hence one of the different driver packs), but I don't know as I gave up trying to get them to play nice very quickly because it generally borked the working one.

If you do find a working combination please let us know! I stopped trying quickly because of the frustrating button situation, and I could imagine the conflict being a show-stopper, or at the very least - a truly distressing experience!

Thanks, Glyn

R.

Hi Glyn,

I'm using the Terratec TStick+ as well.

I think I have the drivers installed OK because SDR# works fine with the dongle (its a Terratec TStick+)

Unfortunately SDR# and DAB Player require different drivers. Like Rash I haven't found a way to use both drivers on the same Windows 7 machine in parallel.

Please try the following to get DAB Player working with the TStick+ (that's how I did it):
  • Install Andreas' Realtek driver package 1: "Treiber1.zip"
  • Install the original Terratec (Realtek) driver
  • Connect your USB dongle
The original Fraunhofer DAB MediaPlayer supplied by Terratec will work as well.
If it still won't run you might have to try a different driver package published on the DAB Player website.

If you would like to use SDR# again you would need to reinstall the alternative USB driver with the "Zadig" tool.

From time to time I'm also using SDR-J DAB on an Ubuntu system, but I'm not too happy about the performance.

Regards,

Jens

Thanks Jens - I'll give that a try.  I was also thinking of trying to install it on a Ubuntu system - but after your comment perhaps I'll persevere with Windows first - it's a more familiar environment for me!

Glyn

PS just Used your Debian install package to install the full works onto a Ubuntu machine.  Once I discovered dpkg and found out how to use it, it worked fine apart from a dependency problem with UHD which I sorted by:-
sudo apt-get -f install

Hi Glyn,

I got the SDR - J going a few weeks ago with the same dongle but you must use the included ZADIAG.exe to replace the driver with WinUsb -  (list all devices) then select Options,  Bulk In , Interface, Interface 0 - that's the dongle (1 is the IR port I think).

I couldn't get anything to work unless I put the gain up to 48 using sdr-j-dabreceiver-0.98.exe. I managed to get the local 10C mux from Chosen Hill and think it was the BBC National 12B. The Local mux was very choppy I could only get BBC Radio Glos on Audio. The other 3 wouldn't "sync" (probably not the correct term).  I did get a better result with my home made Yagi pointing to Glos Airport even thought it's tuned to 127.425Mhz.

I got the SDRSharp going as well - very pretty! :)

Saying that, I think I will be using my "spare HRF" with no TX for now instead of the Dongle. You can use a windows driver to run it as well.

Give me a bell if you need to you.

Thanks Andy I'll give it a try.  The engineer in me feels blind without some tools to see the signal!

The RTL dongles are renowned for being pretty deaf.  On mine I get nothing using the supplied rod antenna - but we are very low and a known signal blackspot. But when connected to my (100MHz FM) loft antenna (with masthead amp) I get plenty of stations - about 30.

I'm surprised it is so poor for you - your rooftop is almost certainly line of sight to Chosen Hill.   Quite possibly you have the gain up too high for using the rooftop antenna making the front-end saturate - it might be better without amplification....
