Hi All,
Although, Martis Peak is more known for snowshoeing and crosscountry skiing, it seems to be a good place to hike, too. This weekend Curt and I accidentally ended up in this area after deciding it wasn't a good idea to try Castle Peak with all the snow that is still left. We hiked to the Spur Viewpoint on the Tahoe Rim Trail only but thought it'll be a nice hike to Martis Peak. This hike will offer us a lot of options.
For a nice and easy hike, the 3 miles roundtrip hike up to the Spur Viewpoint is worth the view. It’s mainly a gradual uphill to get to the viewing point and downhill back.
For the more enthused hikers, the Martis Peak Rd. hike is about 8 miles roundtrip. I believe there is a (fire) lookout point there.
And for the really enthusiastic hikers, they can go the 14 miles roundtrip to Mt. Baldy. =D
If you’re considering only the Viewpoint hike, you’ll have time to drive (about 10 minutes) to Kings Beach. There you’ll find rentals for canoeing and other water sports. Or go cheap and go swimming! Note parking in the Kings Beach Parking Lot is $8.
There is lodging nearby if people want to hike, hang out at the beach, and relax for the weekend.
Date: July 23rd, 2011
Time: 8:30AM @ trailhead
Directions:
1.) Take I-80 East
2.) Take exit 188B for CA-89/ CA-267 toward Sierraville/ Lake Tahoe
3.) Turn right onto CA-267 E
4.) Look for the National Forest Tahoe Basin brown and tan sign (as you drive south on CA-267, this sign is shortly after Brockway Summit). We’ll meet there and walk across to the trailhead. Parking is limited nearby the sign on that side of the highway and no facilities. Please buddy up and carpool.
Attached is the trail map, view from the Spur Viewpoint, and mileage count sign at the trailhead.

Just a quick heads up that it looks like I am not making this trip. The combination of not getting much sleep last night and the weather have conspired against me.
Hope you hearty souls that make the hike have good weather and I look forward to seeing those of you who hike Mt. Rose.
Dale
